Issue with User Agent String for Microsoft Remote Desktop app for iPad OS

Copper Contributor

Any solutions?

It has come to our attention that when using the Remote Desktop application on an iPad, the application appears to be coming from a Mac when it hits our SAML broker for authentication.

We have seen this before with some applications, despite any other settings on the iPad that the user has control over.

Unfortunately, this causes or security software to treat the authentication attempt as a Mac trying to authenticate, instead of an iPad.  Therefore, it fails the controls we have in place and cannot access WVD.

The specifics are shown below:

Access attempt from the Remote Desktop app for iPad version 10.0.3 (4010)

User Agent string from the browser:  Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko)

The expected string should be in this form: Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 13_3_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/13.0.5 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1

Since this app is running on an iPad, it should return the appropriate user agent string.

Hoping someone on this Email can provide a solution to this issue, or feedback on Microsoft’s plan to update the remote desktop app to the appropriate user agent.
