Announcing general availability of Azure Database for MySQL reserved capacity

At Microsoft Ignite 2019 we announced the general availability of Azure Database for MySQL reserved capacity, This new pricing option enables savings of up to 50%* compared to the pay-as-you-go pricing associated with pre-paying for MySQL database vCores for a one-year term.

Apply reserved capacity to a single subscription or share across your resources

Azure Database for MySQL reserved capacity is scoped to a single resource group, a single subscription, or can be shared. This pricing option allows you to control how many subscriptions take advantage of the benefit and how the reserved capacity is applied to specific subscriptions.

  • Single resource group scope— Applies the reservation discount to the matching resources in the selected resource group only.
  • Single subscription scope— Applies the reservation discount to the matching resources in the selected subscription.
  • Shared scope— Applies the reservation discount to matching resources in eligible subscriptions that are in the billing context. For Enterprise Agreement customers, the billing context is the enrollment. For Microsoft Customer Agreement customers, the billing scope is the billing profile. For individual subscriptions with pay-as-you-go rates, the billing scope is all eligible subscriptions created by the account administrator.

Keep your savings when you need to make changes

Azure Database for MySQL reserved capacity provides vCore size flexibility that enables scaling up or down within a performance tier and region without impacting your reserved capacity. For example, if the user purchases 16 Gen5 vCores of reserved capacity for Azure Database for MySQL general purpose and decide to deploy a 4 vCore database server and an 8 vCore database server, both with Gen 5 compute, your reserved capacity benefit will automatically apply to both. If the user decides to scale up your server to 8 vCores, the reserved capacity benefit will also automatically apply.

*Savings based on vCore pricing for Azure Database for MySQL instance general purpose in East Asia region, running 730 hours per month. Savings are calculated from on pre-purchase standard against 1-year reserved capacity.

Our goal is to simplify the manageability of your database server and bring in the benefits of reduced total cost of ownership for running your databases on Azure. Go ahead and start using the reserved capacity for your existing and new Azure Database for MySQL. All reservations are flexible and can be exchanged and cancelled when the customer desires, though limits will still apply.
