Hi all,

Just want to give you all a heads up on an issue that you may run in to, and how to proactively alleviate it. On Windows Server 2008 (not R2), you may experience a situation where the server hangs at the ‘Applying User Settings’ screen. This can occur if you install a certificate for SSL, such as VPN, ISA, TMG or Sharepoint, and is due to a deadlock condition in the Service Control Manager involving the Cryptographic service. In addition, you may find that several base Windows services do not start properly at startup.

We do have a kb article and hotfix to alleviate this issue. If you plan to implement certificates on Windows Server 2008, we recommend proactively installing the patch referenced in this kb article:
