Top Feedback Summary for June 23

June 30th Edit: We have no updates coming to this list until mid-July as we take a break for a couple weeks! See you then!

Hey, Insiders! This week is pretty small with two items getting marked as Addressed. Let’s hop right into it!

First up, at the beginning of the month we had mentioned that we were waiting for the feature for Allow users to turn off the “Disable developer mode extensions” notification to reach our Beta channel before marking this as Addressed. This week, we’re excited to announce that Beta users should start to see this option. When you are using Developer Mode from the edge://extensions page, you will now be able to tell the notification that you are in Developer Mode directly from the dialog itself. Give it a shot! This should roll into our Stable channel in the near future.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we are marking The address bar and its text are too big, and should be smaller like Chrome as Addressed. Several of you have noticed this change over the past few weeks, and we’re excited to bring this to the browser for our Insiders. Note that the change here is that we made the text in the address bar smaller, and this brings parity to Chrome.

That’s all for this week! Since we are closing out these two items, it’s a great time to give a reminder that we are constantly reviewing feedback to make adjustments based on what you all say. Not as excited as we are about some changes? Or are you in love with how everything works now? Either way, let us know directly through the browser by heading to the menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. The team looks forward to seeing your thoughts!

Here’s the updated list for this week:

This is exactly the opposite of what a lot of people wanted. You even sent me an email saying that my feedback (about the address bar font being too small) was being addressed.

The really big difference between Edge and Chrome's toolbar is not the text size but the extension etc button width. In Edge the buttons are so much wider that one can only have many fewer extension buttons visible in the toolbar and still have an address bar of a useful width. Which exacerbates the problem created when you removed the previous very good UI for left and right clicking on extension buttons that don't fit in the toolbar and instead added the extensions button, which is simply no good for that role with say 20 more extensions than will fit in the toolbar. In Chrome I can fit 15 extension buttons in the width taken by 10 in Edge, and still have a lot wider address bar than in Edge.
Exactly my thoughts.

I guess this is what happens when you try to listen *too much* to the community, and the silent majority - which has no complaint - doesn't give feedback because they're perfectly happy with it.

It was so much more comfortable previously when not sitting up close from my computer screen.
I am wondering what is the alternative plan for "Bring the tab set aside feature from the current version of Microsoft Edge"?

@MissyQ What happened to the ink on webpage feature?

Is that not planned anymore?

Inking on webpages was addressed back in December and should be in all of our browser channels. If you are noticing any issues with it, please do report that through the feedback tool in the browser.

A reminder, if you want to see changes to the decisions we've made, please submit feedback through the browser to let us know. The original post here details the best way to do that. And if you are curious about the plans for items we still have Discussions open for, remember to hop into those threads. :)

Thanks, all!

@MissyQ

Thanks for the reply. I think you are talking about the inking on pdfs feature am I right?

I don't know any possible way to use the inking on webpages feature from legacy edge in the chromium edge.

I only know tutorials regarding the legacy edge like this one:  How to Use Inking and Web Notes in Microsoft Edge (groovypost.com)

Ink Support, Web notes and Sharing on Chromium Edge - Microsoft Tech Community

No, those are separate, but similar features. We implemented inking on PDFs in October 2019. In order to use inking on a web page, you first need to use the web capture tool. You can bring it up either via right-clicking on a web page and selecting Web capture, or using the Windows shortcut of Ctrl+Shift+S (Mac should be CMD+Shift+S).

If you are not seeing that option, then please do submit feedback so that the team is aware of the issue. :)

希望能增加双击关闭标签页功能
awesome, thank you very much! I totally missed that!
That is awesome, I was wanting this feature sooo much!! :DD
Do people have issues with embedded media, like videos or audio streams?

The latest official build 91.0.864.59, and this dev build both have playback issues.
Embedded audio streams (radio) do not work anymore, and videos won't play.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Why doen't Edge use native contexto menus on macOS? This is something not only every other browser does, but indeed would mean a more polished experience for macOS users. The custom context menus Edge is using now have some big drawbacks when compared to native ones:

  • The size. Custom Edge menus are huge and more than usually get unexpected placing on a 16inch macbook, it's annoying. Native ones take much less space (about a half).
  • The performance. Custom context menus are rendered as part of the main window which is basically awful because take more time to open. Yes, we are talking about miliseconds, but the delay is noticeable compared to Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
  • They make users get confused because of not being what to expect. Indeed, every other Microsoft app on macOS is using native context menus, so they are completely unexpected.

@MissyQ

Let's redesign Edge to much more like current Windows 11 fluent design! Make the all stuff more rounded corners, fix the dark grey theme to same color as the Windows 11 dark mode color, renew the all icons to the colorful icons like Windows 11, use Mica on the tab bar and settings page like File Explorer and Settings Windows 11.

@MWehrstedtThey have blinders on when it comes to actual feedback - it's arbitrary to what people really want.  They just want to push thru with their perceived agenda and saying that's what actual people need.

I just pop in here once in a while to see what kind of screw-up they did now and just like with the extension button idiocy, they messed up once again when this tripe was not requested by their core audience.

We just decided to strip out Edge and replaced it with Firefox and Chrome on our workstations and laptops - it's a small drop that they would not give a **bleep** anyway, around 2,471 combined at the moment.  We are in the process of fully migrating to Chromebooks also since a couple of people who makes these decisions which includes me got sick and tired of Microsoft not listening to feedback.  We are just a small school district (LAUSD) so yeah, good going guys...*golf clap*

@MissyQ browser started crashing  every 30 seconds or so on friday evening

I'll have to agree here, it would especially help differentiate Edge from vanilla Chromium some more. I'd argue Vivaldi has shown that just because it's using Chromium under the hood, the browser doesn't need to look 100% the same (case in point - Vivaldi uses a real settings menu / window, which I find to be WAY preferable versus the cumbersome full screen settings page that Chromium AND FireFox both use now).
I mentioned this around the end of May and left a lengthy, concerned, and disappointed post regarding the lack of movement on this feature and the radio silence. @MissyQ took the time to leave a lengthy and very honest response:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/top-feedback-summary-for-may-18/m-p/2405911#M5617

I would suspect that the answer is going to be the same if she pings a dev to see what's going on with it (no info at this time / it's still a TODO).

I REALLY want to see this enhancement (as I presume you do as well). Having come from Firefox, it's one of the things I miss (more than one row of top sites).
