We are delighted to announce a Marketplace solution to run Oracle WebLogic Server (WLS) on the Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). The solution is developed with the WebLogic team as part of a broad-ranging partnership between Microsoft and Oracle. The partnership includes joint support for a range of Oracle software running on Azure, including Oracle WebLogic, Oracle Linux, and Oracle DB, as well as interoperability between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Azure.

WLS is a key component in enabling enterprise Java workloads on Azure. The Marketplace solution makes it as easy as possible to move WLS workloads to AKS by automating most boilerplate provisioning tasks. Evaluate the solutions for full production usage and reach out to collaborate on migration cases.

Solution Details

The Marketplace solution enables you to focus on developing and deploying your application instead of initial provisioning and configuration of Java and Azure resources. The automatically provisioned resources include an AKS cluster, the WebLogic Kubernetes Operator, WLS Docker images and the Azure Container Registry (ACR). It is possible to use an existing AKS cluster or ACR instance with the solution if desired. The solution also supports configuring load balancing with Azure App Gateway or the Azure Load Balancer, DNS configuration, SSL/TLS configuration, easing database connectivity, publishing metrics to Azure Monitor as well as mounting Azure Files as Kubernetes Persistence Volumes. The solution will work with any WLS version that supports the Operator, such as 12.2.1.3 and 12.2.1.4.

Oracle and Microsoft also provide basic step-by-step guidance on getting started with WLS and AKS. This guidance is suitable for customers that wish to remain as close as possible to a native Kubernetes manual deployment experience. In addition, Oracle and Microsoft provide solutions to run WLS on Azure Virtual Machines. The solutions targeting virtual machines now support Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in addition to Oracle Linux.

The WLS on AKS solution enables a wide range of production-ready deployment architectures with relative ease. After the initial provisioning is done, you have complete flexibility to further customize your deployment. For example, you can take advantage of a range of Azure resources for additional functionality.

The solution is Bring-Your-Own-License. It assumes you have already procured the appropriate licenses with Oracle and are properly licensed to run WLS on AKS. The solution itself is available free of charge.
