Build your outer loop:  What's next in Yammer

Today, at Microsoft Ignite 2017, we are excited to share an emboldened vision for Yammer - one that creates greater definition and clarity for the role and future of Yammer as a core part of Microsoft 365.

The surprises that organizations encounter today - whether presented by competitive, natural or economic forces - require us to ideate and problem solve around the clock. And organizations must move in lockstep to adapt to the changing world. Successful companies must keep their employees engaged, but more importantly, employees across the company need to be engaged with each other to react effectively to the surprises and challenges of today's world.

Yammer has always served to help organizations around the globe connect people and information, to make better decisions faster. As an open space to connect and engage across your organization, Yammer is the best tool for driving teamwork in what we call your "outer loop." While your "inner loop" of collaborators work with you to rapidly deliver against important projects and deliverables, it is your outer loop connections that drive diversity of thought and organizational change.

Time and time again, we have seen customers achieve success by empowering employees to connect with their outer loop. And we've observed three common patterns in how these connections form. People are openly connecting to:

  1. Drive organizational transparency by sharing information and giving every employee a voice, as we've seen with modern companies like Virgin Trains
  2. Form a community around a shared topic of interest or area of practice, as we've seen with change-makers like Crisis Prevention Institute
  3. Achieve a shared objective through cross-organizational initiatives and ideation, as we've seen with industry leaders like Sanofi Pasteur

Over the coming months you will begin to see innovations in Yammer that accelerate success in these three scenarios, in a commitment to help people gain greater value from their outer loop, effectively and efficiently. In addition to a focus on these scenarios, we are innovating on the fundamental enterprise social experience that Yammer delivers.

Drive productivity through deeper SharePoint integration, the new desktop app and more

Capabilities such as seamless sharing and easy access are critical to creating a social platform that allows employees to get better work done, faster.

SharePoint and Yammer come together to create a better social intranet that bridges information and conversation. We are excited to announce that a new mobile-ready web-part for integrating your Yammer conversations into SharePoint sites will be available in the coming month. In addition, we are enriching the preview and editing experience of SharePoint documents within Yammer, as well as building out default SharePoint file storage and OneNote services for Office 365-connected Yammer groups. Learn more about how to engage employees in your social intranet using Yammer and SharePoint here.

Build in enterprise-grade control, security and compliance

As part of the Office Trust Center, we are committed to providing customers with enterprise-grade security and compliance.

We are pleased to announce that we will be rolling out a highly requested capability for customers outside the U.S. to store their Yammer messaging data regionally. Currently in preview, we are rolling out local data residency starting with new customers in Europe in the first half of 2018, with other regions and rollout to existing customers to follow.

These investments will also allow us to, over time, build eDiscovery, Data Loss Prevention and Customer Lockbox capabilities for Yammer within the Office admin center, in a commitment to providing a singular and consistent experience for our customers. The Yammer team also remains closely aligned with the Office Trust Center to ensure compliance with GDPR requirements.

Accelerate successful community management

Strong connections within organizations are oftentimes built through the efforts of community managers. These are individuals who lay the foundation of expectations, determine how Yammer can drive business value and measure the impact of Yammer on your organization.

We are thrilled to share new group insights, which will be available directly in Yammer in the coming months, to help community managers better understand and nurture their Yammer groups. Built with extensive feedback, group insights will allow group owners and members to have a comprehensive view of engagement including posts, reads and likes.

Group insights give you a view of people and content activity trends for group members and non-members across 7-day, 28-day and 12-month periods. This data will also be available for you to export directly from Yammer so you can create reports and make decisions with ease.

We continue to build Yammer reporting capabilities into the Office 365 admin center, so you can gain a better understanding of how your organization is using and adopting Yammer. Over the past year, Yammer user, device and groups activity data has been made available in the Office 365 Usage Reporting Dashboard. These reports help admins understand how people in their organization are using Yammer so they can prioritize efforts, improve training and measure adoption success.

Office 365 Usage Analytics - currently available as preview as Office 365 Adoption Content Pack - combine Yammer user and device data with interactive analysis capabilities through Power BI, so that admins can create and share richer reports. You will soon be able to access Yammer group activity data as part of the general availability of Office 365 Usage Analytics in early 2018.

Next week, Yammer group data will be integrated into the Microsoft Graph reporting APIs, so that you can customize your own reports, analysis and scorecards of your IT services in one unified place.

Lastly, the newly released Office 365 Reports Reader Role allows IT admins to provide business stakeholders outside of IT with access to usage and adoption reporting.

Do you know how people will access their group insight reports? Will everyone in the group be able to access these or just those who have Admin status?

Congratulations on the progress. I'm loving the new desktop app.

Anything you can share re. O365 cards coming up in Yammer?

Especially with the new LinkedIn integration on the 365 cards, that would be an awesome win for us.

Coming, not coming, this year, distant future, not planned... Any hint on roadmap for that?

Thanks!

Microsoft

@Mandy Clark all group members will be able to access group insights in Yammer. Office 365 admin center reports will remain only available to Office 365 admins and individuals designated with the new Reports Reader Role.

@Jorge Carvalho we're glad you are enjoying the new desktop app! That was an exciting feature to launch! On LinkedIn, that is a good question. As we continue to integrate Yammer with the rest of the suite, we expect to leverage the same unified profile across the suite. Now, that comes with our current investment in local data residency and integrating our infrastructure such that you get a singular and consistent experience, so it's on our roadmap but we need the building blocks first. Thanks for your engagement and excitement around this area!

So excited that all of these updates are coming to Yammer- a lot by the end of the year too!

Love the updates!  The distinction of Inner/Outer Loop is really nice.  Can't wait to see Group analytics and more against our Yammer network and thrilled you guys are extending data export API.  Keep up the awesome work!!!

Hi,

Very nice update!

I may sound strange but, what is the future for the Freemium Version of Yammer?

Or where can I get some information about it.

We have invested a lot of time and content using the free version and would like to know what Microsoft intend to do with it?

Regards,

Simon

Thanks for your excitement everyone!

@Simon B we are assessing our plans for freemium and should be sharing more over the coming months. As you can see from our roadmap, we are heavily invested in deep integration with the rest of the Office 365 suite. I'd be happy to discuss your particular organization's usage and talk through the benefits and options for you. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to set up some time.
