the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed

Server OS 2012 R2

Following a month of server behaving the computer password sync (30day timer) seems to have run (checked the date modified on the AD computer object was 30 days prior)  Since this event I am unable to login using a domain account to the server).  Anyone seen this before where the password update process breaks the trust?

Thanks

Might try disjoin, reboot, rejoin domain.

Yes that worked but would like to get to root cause if poss

just a quick question: did you use snapshots at the server?
Because if you use snapshots and the machine passwords changed before you recover a snapshot that is definitively possible.

the local machine password is different to the one in the AD then...

Hello ReggieDaMole,

When you log on to a computer that is running on a Windows server in a domain environment, you will receive the following error,

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."

In order to resolve this issue, remove the Computer from the Domain and then connect the Computer to the Domain. You must follow the below steps to fix this problem,

  1. Firstly, use a local administrator account to log on to the Computer.
  2. Select Start, press, and right-click Computer -> Properties.
  3. Now, select Change settings beside the computer name.
  4. Then, on the Computer Name tab, you must select Change.
  5. Under the Member of heading, select Workgroup, type a workgroup name, and then select OK to apply.
  6. After being prompted to restart the server, select OK.
  7. Under the Computer Name tab, select Change again.
  8. Under the Member of heading, choose Domain, and then type the domain name.
  9. Noe, select OK and then type the credentials of the user who has permission to the Domain.
  10. When you are prompted to restart the server, choose OK.
  11. Restart the Computer.

The above steps will help you to fix the problem related to "the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."
