Not sure what Windows Server license I should use

Copper Contributor

I work at a small refurbishing company and we are looking to set up a WDS and a WSUS server to help deploy and update Windows across the many computers we refurbish.

I see the Essential version of Windows Server supports 25 users and 50 devices. My company has under 10 users, but on a given day we may install and update Windows on around ~30 devices. And then on the next day we may install and update Windows across an entirely new set of ~30 devices.

My concern is whether the 50 devices stated under Windows Server Essential refers to 50 devices total forever, or if its 50 devices at one time. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Hi @chris_acfs-1

Windows Server 2019 Essentials comes with the CALs included so you don't have to worry about that. Your only concern should be in the case you go over 25 users/50 devices - then you'd need to upgrade to Standard.

In addition, if your goal is to manage endpoints, you should also look into Microsoft Intune: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/enterprise-mobility-security/microsoft-intune

Should be 50 concurrent or simultaneous devices.
