Does the use of any component of Windows Analytics create an Azure usage or resource consumption bill? Please explain whether this is a free service or if there are Azure charges for log analytics, storage, or anything else.

Thanks

Windows Analytics is a free solution -- all data ingestion, storage, and processing is exempt from billing. An Azure subscription is required to use the service, but you will not be charged. Note that there are certain license requirements for using Device Health. Learn more here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/device-health-monitor#device-health-licen...

+1 to Zach's reply. I will also point out there is one edge case where you could generate OMS storage costs for the Windows Analytics records.
1. Create a workspace with a given plan (e.g., Standalone plan which includes 30 days of retention)
2. Workspace gets Windows Analytics (and potentially other) records in it over time
3. Customer modifies workspace setting to retain data longer than plan default (say 6 months)
4. For the additional 5 months that records are retained standard OMS charges apply to all records, including Windows Analytics records.
This is unusual, so for most people the correct answer is "no OMS/Azure charges".

Thanks.

Need clarity on this for my manager:

Is there any per node/per month charge for Windows Analytics?

If not, are all charges based on Azure data transmitted/stored? This was my understanding, but the requirement of an OMS workspace is leading to questions related to cost for server OMS suite ($13/node/month). If Windows Analytics cost as much as OMS suite management will not go for it.

Solution
The short answer is that by default using Windows Analytics does not generate OMS/Azure costs.
The longer answer is that there are two layers where Azure Log Analytics / OMS can charge for data: Ingestion, and Extended Storage.
For Ingestion: The Windows Analytics records are always zero-rated. In other words, they don't count toward your ingestion Node count (in per node billing), or your ingestion GB usage (in per GB billing).
For Extended Storage: My understanding is that If you modify your workspace to have longer than default data retention, then all data in the workspace (including Windows Analytics records) may count toward extended storage costs (last I checked extended storage was $0.10 per GB per extended month).

What about Azure costs just to set up and use an OMS workspace? We do not currently have one.

OMS (aka Azure Log Analytics) is an Azure resource, so you have to sign-in to an Azure subscription (new or existing) to create the workspace. The act of creating the workspace is zero-cost. Once you have a workspace the Windows Analytics data ingestion is also zero-cost. The only way to generate Azure charges is to use the workspace for other things (e.g., server monitoring with the OMS agent), or by customizing the workspace to have extended storage.

Matthew,

Is is possible in the future to have the free offering where an Azure subscription sign up is not required and there is no possibility for incurring cost?

The core technology here is Azure Log Analytics which is an Azure service. I'm not aware of a scenario where you could use Azure Log Analytics without signing in to an Azure subscription. Azure does have free trial subscriptions, but these still require a credit card during signup for identity confirmation/age-restriction/anti-abuse reasons.
It does not. It's a 0 cost.
It is no longer for free. If I have a Log Analytics workspace created before April 2, 2018, can I continue to be on the old free tier? Customers who started using Log Analytics on the free tier before April 2, 2018 can continue to stay on the old free tier. The old free tier has a 500 MB limit on the amount of data collected daily and doesn’t allow for data retention periods longer than 7 days. The new pricing model does not have any limits on the amount of data collected daily and allows you to retain your log data for up to two years. Customers on the old pricing model can switch at any time to the new pricing model above. FAQ can you find here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/log-analytics/

Just to clarify, this is not FREE, it is included in the following licenses

  • Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education per-device with active Software Assurance
  • Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 per-device or per-user subscription (including Microsoft 365 F1, E3, or E5)
  • Windows 10 Education A3 or A5 (including Microsoft 365 Education A3 or A5)
  • Windows VDA E3 or E5 per-device or per-user subscription
  • Windows Server 2016 and on
AFAIK, that last licensing requirement just applies to Device Health, not the rest of Windows Analytics. Have you seen clarifications from Microsoft to the contrary?

My understanding Windows Analytics has always been it was part of the Enterprise OS license.

The old link I had with the info is gone, but did find a Computer World article that supports this - https://www.computerworld.com.au/article/635979/microsoft-shows-it-how-get-bigger-bang-from-windows-...

Team -

I have a client and  they are not on an EA nor have a cloud agreement.  They need to go to WIn10 and thus need to run Analytics.  They stood up a trial tenant to kick the tires and love it.

1) Is there a way to extend a trail tenant until we get them on their own tenant?

2) Can they have  hospital billed azure tenant rather than an individual Swipe and go Tennant.

2A) Can the trial tenant be converted to a billed tenant to the hospital.

3) Am I to understand that the collection, ingestion and analyzation of collected data is free and stored for use for 30 days before being overwritten.  Should a client want to extend the storage period, it costs .10 a gig.   Is there documentation that states this?

4) Approx. how much data is accumulated, on average, per workstation. Ina typical HLS Hospital client. Probavly hard to state but if anyone has any data for 25K users for 30 days, that would be great.

I would recommend extending into a PAYG subscription [Pay as you go subscription.] I've tested and verified that there will be zero charges for Windows Analytics-related data and only for other services (IaaS/PaaS) you may consume,

Dear Matthew.. If windows analytics was connected to SCCM.. Is there any extra charges?

Hi,

As per Windows Analytics docs, Integrating with Upgrade Readiness with SCCM CB should not be charged. Please refer FAQ of Windows Analytics doc.
