Skype for Business Server 2015 and SQL Server 2016

Iron Contributor

Is or when is SQL Server 2016 supported as a Back end databases for Skype for Business Server 2015?

On the Technet (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn951388.aspx#DBs) only SQL 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014 are listed? Any News about the use of SQL 2016 with Skype for Business? Or is there a Timeline about that?

Hi Adrian,

I guess you can install SQL server 2016 you need to test it if it works well. Mostly there are new features and some fixes in the new version. What is the reason behind to use SQL Server 2016 ? SQL 2008/2012/2014 works fine with Skype for Business.

It would be nice if Microsoft would bless the use of SQL Server 2016 with Skype for Business 2015. No reason to use a 3 year old product and with SQL Server 2017 just around the corner, SQL Server 2014 seems odd to install today.

Totally agree, also technet isn't updated about SFB2016 and Windows Server 2016 yet.

Fully agree - working as Solution Architect for a big danish company where we right now are setting up Skype for Business and would prefer to use SQL 2016. As long as we got no official statement regarding usage of SQL 2016 with Skype for Business we are forced to install SQL 2014 :(

Hi Erwin,

May update supports now Windows Server 2016.

Hopefully someone from MSFT can respond to this topic: Is there any date or release on the roadmap when SQL 2016 will be supported?

I opened a ticket to Premier on this a couple weeks back, and this is what I got back.

Symptom - Customer has requested supportability of SQL 2016 with SfB 2015 Server.
Cause - SQL 2012 Server mainstream support ending within next calendar year.
Resolution - SQL 2016 is currently not supported, however Product group is working on determining steps to enable the use of SQL 2016 Server with SfB 2015 Server.

So, still not supported and no ETA at this time.

Is there any news about SQL 2016 and Skype for Business Server 2015?

Regards

I think we will need to wait till CU7 will be released.

Erwin,

How certain are you about CU7 having support for Sql 2016?  Do you know when that will be available?

There is no ETA for CU7 available now, but i should be available in Q2/18
