Tenant admins can configure CsIPPhone policy on their tenants to receive firmware updates for their Polycom VVX phones from Skype for Business Online services. A fix was recently pushed to the Skype for Business Online service which enables the VVX devices to update their firmware if the required CsIPPhone policy parameter is enabled.

To receive updates through SfB Online services, please make sure to configure the phone policy using the command below:

Set-CsIPPhonePolicy -EnableDeviceUpdate $True

For more details please refer to Deploying Skype for Business Online phones.

Soon we will be releasing firmware update 5.5.1.11526. for more details on what will be available in this firmware update please see New features in the firmware update for Polycom VVX IP phones.

Custom Provisioning Server vs Skype for Business Online services
Polycom VVX phones can receive firmware updates from either a custom provisioning server deployed at customer site or through the Skype for Business Online services. Tenant Admin must make sure their phones have a single source of firmware update at any time to avoid update-loops. If you have configured a local provisioning server to update the phones in your organization you must disable the device update parameter in the CsIPPhonePolicy.

To disable firmware updates from the Skype for Business Online server, please make sure to configure the phone policy using the command below:

Set-CsIPPhonePolicy -EnableDeviceUpdate $False

IMPORTANT: If the tenant is enabled for device updates and is also receiving firmware update from local provisioning servers, the phones would go on an indefinite reboot loop when there is a conflict in the firmware versions from both the sources.

Does this mean that new powershell commandlets will be provided to configure the phone lock in 5.5.1? Currently there is no way to manage the lock in that version and it causes obvious problems with our common area phones, we have resorted to labeling those phones with the unlock code.

Mohamad Saleem ,

Please see screen shot above, After edit the IP phone policy we can't even get update notification on phone display.

Copper Contributor

How do we manage the VVX phone update through Skype for business online? Don't see an option like we use to control on on-prem. For that we have to use an third party tool.

Copper Contributor

Hi Sagarika,

Thanks for your comment, we are not plan to deploy on on-perm and we talking about for online .

Copper Contributor

My question is how do we manage online? How do we find the Inventory of the IP phones online?

Copper Contributor

Hi Sagarika,

If your phone able to access internet and if u use SFB online account  , u can see notification as firmware update available on phone LCD screen .

u may need to press the notification and upgrade firmware for the phones manually .

Hi, is there a list of published firmware for each device in Skype for Business Online please? We upgraded Polycom Trio on latest firmware but it gets downgraded when connecting to Online. So we disable this policy, but definitely want to use it. Thanks.

Hi, yes thanks, I know that I can download manually here. But what to want to know is when this version will Microsoft push as update in Skype for Business Online.

  • Polycom Website (manual upgrade) - Version 5.5.4
  • Microsoft Skype for Business Online (automatic update service) - Versions 5.5.2

Version on S4B has bug which render devices stuck with Low Memory after hours of usage. If you do not disable updates in S4B, Polycom get downgraded automatically to older version with bug even if you manually upgrade. So for that reason we disable updates in S4B. But we want them in future if someone check the version in cloud to current.

On the LCD screen our Update Status: Update Unavailable.  Is there a reason for this as we cannot auto update any phone from the SfB Online Service.

We are using Polycom VVX 410 with the EnableDeviceUpdate: True via the Set-CsIPPhonePolicy cmdlet.

You cant rely on Skype support to keep the phone updated.  We turned this off and upadte firmware ourselves because MS has very old versions with known bugs that make it a frustrating experience for end users and admins.  My suggestion is not to use the auto-update from Skype and update manually.  As annoying as it is to do the manual updates, you can control the upgrades to stable versions of the firmware.  Auto managed phone firmwares are not an achievable goal until MS ensures someone is actively managing the versions instead of saying it's a feature and leaving it outdated.

Totally agreed. Right now also kind of question what about Polycom firmware for Teams and when they Microsoft/Polycom push them into service. Or at least them publish them for download.
