The SharePoint Framework (SPFx) is a page and web part model that provides full support for client-side SharePoint development, easy integration with SharePoint data, and support for open source tooling such as Yeoman, Gulp, Visual Studio Code, etc.  SPFx allows you to take advantage of the latest web templating and JavaScript frameworks (I.e. Angular, Ember, Handlebars, etc.).

For more information on the SharePoint Framework I would recommend reading our initial announcement post at https://blogs.office.com/2016/05/04/the-sharepoint-framework-an-open-and-connected-platform/ and then getting started at http://dev.office.com/sharepoint.

SPFx is an extension of our existing extensibility models designed to support current industry and technology trends.  As an extension to our existing models, it does not make obsolete nor deprecate our in-market models such as Add-Ins, FTC, etc.
