SharePoint 2016 Document Library Search

Copper Contributor

Hi,

We are using SharePoint 2016. And we create a document library to store our folders, document sets and documents. We found that within the document library, the search functions cannot work properly.

When we import 1000 items(including folders, document sets and documents), the search looks OK. And 2000 items still OK. However, once we import over 2000 items into one document library, the search inside this document library cannot search everything. For example, if we search words such as "on", "of", it cannot return all items that contain "on", "of". It may have 10 items that have "on" but it only returns 5 search result if we search "on".

Could anyone help on this? Will the document library search performance be affected by the item quantity? What is the item threshold on the item limit in one document library? Thanks!!

Best Regards,

Yannis

SharePoint Search does not have limitations on the # of items it can search through.  A document library can hold 30million items.

SharePoint Search can be finicky. It's important to understand that search works on managed/crawled properties. A search crawl has to index the content before it can be found using search. Adding files to a library and searching, will not show the newly added files.

It's also important to note that search can be customized to have query rules and/or exclude content that may be duplicate. Can you clarify a bit more about your list, and how you are searching, are waiting for crawls?
