New External Sharing Experience

Copper Contributor

Good day

I have shared a library in SharePoint online with an external user, the user logs in with his Microsoft account and can access the documents, however he can only open a document in the browser and not in excel or word directly to edit. the Library  and site collection is set to open in client application. External user has edit permissions. Our company is using Office 365, is there a way user can edit directly in client application and not online?

Also would it be possible for the user to sync the shared library?

Thank you

So what happens when he right clicks and tries Edit in Excel . Does it happen in all browsers? Any error screenshot will be helpful.

Thanks

This is current expected behavior. Expect some changes here thou in the future think some Microsoft folks have suggested they are working on allowing this to work in the future but right now the only way you can do it is by using the old sharing method. The user must have an explicit account to login to use the office clients. You can’t use the new sharing UI.

So if you add someone directly to the file / folder / site. Or as a guest to the group then they can use he clients. Otherwise it’s office online only.

The option to edit in excel or word is not available, only option is to open online.

trying to send snapshot, but for some or other reason we cannot log in this morning, as soon as I can will send snapshot

@Deleted is correct. The new secure external sharing flow currently does not allow support for opening the document in the Office clients. If you share a site or add the user to your organization via Azure B2B sharing, they will get a full guest account & be able to open in client. Thanks!
