Chrome open in Excel downloads the file

Iron Contributor

I have a link from a web page to an Excel document in SharePoint Online. The following behavior happens:

  1. Chrome automatically downloads the file and forces the user to save it somewhere which then "unlinks" the document from the SharePoint library. The user has to make the changes and upload the file over the old file to get it updated in SharePoint.
  2. IE will download the file but with the yellow warning and "Edit Workbook" button. Once this is clicked the document is in edit mode and still linked to the SharePoint library.
  3. If you go to the document through IE rather than using the link from the external system and click on the document then Excel Online opens.

Because the external system works best with Chrome, is there a way to get Chrome to either open in Excel Online or at a minimum keep the link to the document to prevent the user from having to save it and upload it? The library setting for default behavior is to use the server defualt (open in browser).

Solution
If you edit your link you have and remove the file from the path and navigate to the library and then select and use the copy link button you will get the proper URL that will open in office online. Select “existing access” option.
Thank you and thank you for the quick reply!
