Can you disable the new unified search box in the suite bar?

Brass Contributor

I've seen that a new search box is rolling out across Office 365 that appears in the suite bar. Is it possible to disable this (temporarily)? Our Intranet solution already has a bespoke search box at the top of every page and the new search box will appear directly above it which will no doubt cause confusion for our users. It would be good to know if we can at least disable the new search box whilst we figure out whether we can up date our solution to allow the two to coexist or simply to remove our box altogether.

I don't that will be possible. MS has been working on standardizing/consolidating all of the different search box locations. I would recommend disabling yours as soon as possible. You will also want to spend some time with the new Microsoft Search features, see https://resources.techcommunity.microsoft.com/microsoft-search/

Thanks @Dean Gross, that was my suspicion. I just was hoping their might be a way to turn it off if only to buy us a bit more time. We're not sure exactly when the new search box will appear in our tenant.

@Paul Bevis if you need to customize modern search, the best way will be with the PnP web parts, see this https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/blogs/pnp-webcast-sharepoint-framework-modern-searc... to get started

Thank for the information Dean, good to know!
