Important update [8/23/2019]: Microsoft will be ending support for the Hybrid Auditing in SharePoint 2016 preview in the near future. After support ends, no new logs will be sent to the Security and Compliance Center in Office 365; noted, too, in related documentation.

Ubiquitous connectivity, the proliferation of devices – the rise of the cloud.

The cloud has become mainstream and services such as Office 365 are an attractive alternative to on-premises business solutions with SharePoint.  However, for a variety of reasons, you might want to or need to deploy specific solutions in the cloud while still maintaining your on-premises investments.  For some organizations, you may wish to gradually move to cloud using a staged, workload-driven approach.  Hybrid scenarios with Office 365 and SharePoint on-premises allow you to bring the cloud to your business while bringing the business to the cloud.  From on-premises to the cloud and back—your information is where and when you want, at your pace, using the investments you already have. Your existing solutions coexist with the cloud—without the full cost of migration. You can even use Delve and Power BI with on-premises data.

The cloud is no longer a luxury—it’s central to a mobile, modern workplace—and Office 365 brings the cloud to you, on your terms and across SharePoint and OneDrive we’re constantly working to help you take advantage of the power of Office 365.

In November we announced preview availability of two new hybrid scenarios coinciding with Feature Pack 2 for SharePoint Server 2016 – hybrid auditing and hybrid taxonomy..

Hybrid Taxonomy (Generally Available)
Today we’re pleased to announce hybrid taxonomy is generally available.

Taxonomy is key to promoting discoverability and access to the right information at the right time. Hybrid taxonomy in SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Server 2016 allows customers to bring their taxonomy store to Office 365 enabling a single-source for creating and managing Terms, Term Sets and Groups through a single Managed Metadata Service.

Hybrid Auditing (Preview)

Important update [8/23/2019]: Microsoft will be ending support for the Hybrid Auditing in SharePoint 2016 preview in the near future. After support ends, no new logs will be sent to the Security and Compliance Center in Office 365; noted, too, in related documentation.

Hybrid auditing was a feature to help administrators manage their SharePoint infrastructure by giving them access to various reports and dashboards in Office 365. The reports were generated from SharePoint Server 2016 on-premises diagnostic and usage logs. This feature did not move out of preview and now is marked to have support ended.

I know Bill won't mind this plug, since he and his team are sponsoring the research, but please take a few minutes and complete our anonymous survey on Hybrid SharePoint at http://hybrid-sp.collabtalk.com

This is an independent research effort lead by CollabTalk LLC and the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University, and is being sponsored by Microsoft, PixelMill, B&R Business Solutions, Rencore, Crow Canyon Systems, tyGraph, Focal Point Solutions, AvePoint, 1105media (Redmond Magazine), BZ Media (SPtechCon), the European SharePoint Conference, and fiftyfiveandfive.

The survey concludes on March 22nd, with research and analysis to be available mid-April. There will also be an early preview of the results in a panel discussion during the Tuesday keynote at SPTechCon Austin with myself, Mark Kashman (Microsoft), Eric Overfield (PixelMill), and John White (tyGraph).

Thanks!

Christian  - the survey link did not work for me?

@Christian Buckley The link is wrong. Can you fix it?

try it now

That works! Thank you.

Does this include the content type publishing part of the Managed Metadata Service Application as well?

Microsoft

Gabriel, the Hybrid Taxonomy is focused on the Term Store and doesn't include the Content Type Hub. For the hybrid project I was a part of, we recreated the hub content types in SPO and mapped to the term set in the SPO term store.

Hello two things... Link to download pocket guide still is not working and @Pam could you please elaborate the answer given to @Gabriel i'm really intwtested about cth. Ans you know metadara without ctypes is really hard.

Microsoft

Sure @Jose Luis Serrano. For our environment, we did our best to freeze the content types in the on-premises content type hub and at migration duplicate them (meaning, rebuild them) in our SPO content type hub. We mapped the ones in SPO to the term sets in the SPO Term Store, which consisted of term sets that were migrated from on-prem. At that point, we tried not to many any changes to the on-premises content types and if there were changes they needed to also be made (via the SPO admin UI) online. This can be a lot of effort, so we focused on this work for the highest value content that was leveraging the managed metadata service. We tried to keep the number content types managed in the hub as small as possible, aligned just to key business needs. I'll be honest, this was a while ago, so we were using custom, internal build hybrid taxonomy tools (it was before Hybrid Taxonomy was available in the product) but I think the concepts remain the same even today since the CTH isn't part of the current tool either.

Hi Bill,

Say, if I were to integrate Office Online Server with SharePoint 2016 On-premise, it would support browser based instances of word, excel etc when using the on-premises SharePoint. Can I get the same functionality by implementing SharePoint Hybrid instead of integrating Office Online Server with SP 2016 On-Premise.

Copper Contributor

Hi Bill, I have tried to Pocket Guide link today in several browsers and it's still not working.....any ideas?
