Today is a very exciting and important day for everyone who is interrested in or already operating SharePoint Server On Premises. As per Tech Community announcement of today , SharePoint 2019 Public Preview was just released!

I am happy to be able to summarize in-depth and long-awaited information on the new SharePoint Server at this early point in time.

What's in SharePoint Server 2019?

What can you expect of this new on-prem version of the product? Bill Baer announced first details, as he introduced SharePoint 2019 in his recent Tech Community Blog Post.

By today, there is a new and very detailled document available. Make sure you check out the SharePoint Server 2019 Preview Reviewer’s Guide.

User experience improvements
SharePoint Server 2019 delivers innovations in user experience from SharePoint Online, with improvements to document libraries and navigation constructs that are consistent with Office 365.

These updates have proven successful in driving adoption in Office 365, and will now benefit SharePoint Server. Using the cloud as a baseline, we’re bringing the most compelling communications and collaborative experiences to customers of SharePoint 2019. These investments include the introduction of Communications Sites, Team News, and modern Team Sites to include Lists and Libraries and in support of broader data mobility the Next Generation Sync Client (NGSC) support for reliable access to your documents – anywhere, anytime.

Platform enhancements
As with SharePoint Server 2016, for SharePoint Server 2019 we continue to derive our on-premises server from our platform investments in SharePoint Online with new native support for hybrid scenarios that can be configured during your deployment.

Business process improvements
We know that customers worldwide use SharePoint to support collaboration, search, business process automation, and custom business applications; and we know that many customers rely on SharePoint Server for mission-critical workloads. We know it’s not always easy to move your business, your workloads, to the cloud so we’re investing in supporting the use of process automation and forms technologies such as Microsoft PowerApps and Flow to connect with your on-premises data with 2019.

List of removed Features:

    • Code-Based Sandbox Solutions
Code-based sandbox solutions were deprecated in SharePoint Server 2013 and have now been removed in SharePoint Online. Customers are recommended to explore SharePoint add-ins as an alternative, which are fully supported for both SharePoint on-premises and SharePoint Online.

    • Digest Authentication
Microsoft is deprecating the Digest authentication feature in Internet Information Services (IIS). This authentication mechanism isn’t very popular and there are many alternative authentication mechanisms available with better interoperability.

    • Incoming email automatic mode
Microsoft is deprecating the IIS 6 Management compatibility features in Internet Information Services (IIS). Customers using incoming email are recommended to use advanced mode instead, which allows you to manually manage the IIS SMTP service and drop folder.

    • Multi-Tenancy
The cost and complexity of providing an on-premises alternative has become prohibitive, so we will no longer support multi-tenancy in the SharePoint Server 2019 Public Preview release

    • PowerPivot Gallery and Refresh
Microsoft BI strategy has shifted away from heavy integration to a standalone BI solution, Power BI, to give customers a flexible, optional integration with SharePoint along with standalone capabilities. Both PowerBI.com and Power BI Report Server offer the option to host and view Excel Workbooks with PowerPivot models

    • Visio Services - Silverlight Based Rendering
Visio Services has 2 options for rendering Visio diagrams: Microsoft Silverlight-based and PNG-based. Microsoft Silverlight is a technology that will no longer be supported as of October 12, 2021. Visio Services will only render Visio diagrams using the PNG-based technology.
