We started getting this error when attaching a file from SharePoint or OneDrive as a link. It says an error occurred when updating permissions for the file. There is a workaround but want to know if there is a permanent fix. The workaround is to click on the down arrow of the attachment, click change permissions and then choose the permissions but there should be a way for it to happen automatically. If you don't do the workaround the receiver of the email has access denied for permissions.
