With the release of 16.9 (180107) to Insider Slow, we have a few surprises in store for you! While these are small little updates, they are delightful enough to call out here. Outlook for Mac now allows you to -

  • Change the text display size
  • Use swipe gestures on your trackpad to triage
  • View a nice little message when you have no items in a folder

Resize display text

Is the display text in Outlook too big or too small? Were you frustrated that you could only resize the text in the Reading Pane? Well fret no more! Go to Outlook > Preferences > Fonts. You will now see a slider to change the text display size! NOTE: This feature is only available on MacOS El Capitan and above.

Swipe gestures for triage

Have a MacBook, or a trackpad paired with your Mac? Missed being able to easily triage items? Well now you can! A two finger swipe to the right or the left when the mouse is over an email in the item list, will give you the option to either delete the message (or conversation) or archive it. Details on how to use the feature are here. NOTE: This feature is available to Office 365 subscribers only.

Empty folder messages

When you reach Inbox Zero, ever thought it looked a bit drab? Well, we agree! So now you have some messages to let you know the folder is empty.

Excited about the text display resizer. However, the display text slider does not show for me. I have restarted, checked for the latest update, and am running Insider Slow Version 16.9 (180109)

I really like the ability to decrease the size of the folder list text/icons.  Was too big and out of proportion before this update.  However, it shrinks the message font size too.  So, the folder list/side bar looks good, but the font size/text in the email messages are too small.

This is good step. I was looking for ability to change font as well not just size. The default font makes me feel the view is cumbersome. I like the way outlook has a view on Windows.

@Jared Nelson, this feature works only on El Capitan and above. Can you confirm that you are running El Capitan? If you are, and still cannot see it, then can you go to Help > Contact Support to file a ticket?

This is great.  Can we do the same with the message reading pane? It would be great if this was a separate slider. I can increase the size on a message-by-message bases, but would be great to be able to set a default zoom level. Should also include an option to bring it back to the default size.

@Faisal Jeelani Thanks for the reply. I am running Sierra OS on MacBook with Office 365 desktop. I did contact support and provided a screen shot.

I had asked for this feature for the longest time...

Just finished upgrading to 16.9 (18109) and I can't see that feature, only the old one. Running latest Sierra.

Is there a way to disable the Swipe gestures for triage?

thumbs down on the Office 365 requirement for swiping messages to triage...looking forward for this update to Exchange users.

Hey Jared Nelson Did you find a solution to this problem? Excited about the text display resizer. However, the display text slider does not show for me. I have restarted, checked for the latest update, and am running Insider Slow Version 16.9 (180109)

@Jacob Rudolph I submitted a ticket through the Outlook menu via the Help>Contact Support. I sent them some screen shots and my version number. After some exchanges and some restarts, the option was available. I would suggest that route. Not sure if they identified the gap in accessibility.
