In the past, when we were just a small startup company with a few employees we would create accounts with email addresses as firstname@domain.com. As we grew I changed that policy to first initial, last name@domain.com. Now we had an employee quit, but now, six months later, she is returning to the company. I have created her account and when people search for her in Teams, she comes up twice. We are not concerned with retaining the chat history from her old account. Is there any way to purge that old account from Teams?

Well did you remove her account when she quit? What's the status of the user object?
