I am not content with the retirement of Office 2007 because I am happy with this version. It still performs adequately and wasn't exactly cheap to purchase. Now I am forced to reinvest now on a monthly or yearly membership basis, which is even more expensive, to replace a working tool.

I dont use the Office Suite often enough to justify this reinvestment and feel rather coerced into this never ending money game.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

No offense, but complaining about the retirement of 10 year old software is sort of silly.  Of course, you can still use it if you want even if its not supported, yes?

I assume your version of Office 2007 has been updated to the latest version, so If you are "happy with this version. It still performs adequately" then it should tick along nicely and perform adequately for years to come.

You only need to upgrade if you wish to use new features which were not included in Office 2007, so if you are happy with Office 2007, stick with it.

I still use a non-Microsoft program which I bought over twenty years ago. In those days it ran under Windows 95  and it still runs under Windows 10! I have never upgraded because like you, I am " happy with this version. It still performs adequately" but I don't expect the manufacturer to provide support.

Not to be awkward but do you think a decade of support is unreasonable? Personally, I think it's a fair deal but I understand not everyone wants to pay money for something that's still working adequately. At some point though, you have got to progress and move ahead.  Better security, performance improvements, new features, support for new hardware, devices and protocols etc. can't always be backported to earlier versions and it just becomes uneconomical/impractical to continuously support old software.  Ten years is a pretty good innings I think!

If an Office subscription isn't for you (I do appreciate subscriptions rub some people up the wrong way), there is Office Home & Student 2016 and if Outlook is needed, Office Home & Business 2016 for PC, which are one time purchases.

I just want to know if I can do work at home (2007) and will be able to open it up at work?  I have 2010 at my job and I don't expect them to update it.  If they do, it will be a miracle.  Is that what you are saying?  It is very confusing.  This makes me think that I can't use this anymore at all as if it is going to not work and will simply die out.  I also feel like this is a money grab and you are getting into the way Apple is - scare the crap out of people and make them buy the next new thing or you will be left out.  I hate that.  It is not fair.  I don't understand why I have to rent the up to date software.  It is not fair for people who are trying to make it.

And by the way, I do progress, it is just that I do not think it is fair to have to pay money to rent software.  Is this an idea that Bill Gates or did the board of directors decide this?  Please let me know I would really appreciate it.

Ava Donella    You wanted a miracle ... well, here it is!

As I said in my earlier comment, if what you do now works and suits your purpose, then there is no need to upgrade to a later version. All that has changed is that Microsoft has stopped providing support updates for Office 2007. It hasn't supported Office 2004 for over three years and Office 97 for over 10, yet some users still use these older versions exactly as before.

As you have discovered for yourself, your Office 2007 files load into Word 2010 so this function won't suddenly disappear just because Microsoft withdraw support for Office 2007.

I have confirmed with Microsoft (Support Case Number 1396437648) that Office 365 will still load and save files in formats compatible with previous versions, so even if your employer upgrades, you will still be able to use and modify the files previously saved in Word 2007.

I use Word 2010 as part of Microsoft Office 2010. Although by default, Word 2010 will sayve Word Files as .docx, files from Word 2004 and Word 97 which were saved as .doc files will still load and can be saved in the 'old' .doc format – in fact, Word can save files in several different formats.

Obviously, you will always encounter new facilities in a later version of a program which are not available in the previous version.

It's all just a lot of instant gratification, have to have the latest of everything even it it is worthless or not a real improvement, kind of bullspit.

Microsoft's support of 2007 was nothing to write home about back in 2007. The software works, I do not need to have the latest "cloud" software, and quite frankly it would be nice to see some software publisher stick with a working software and just provide updates; but, of course, that would not be Microsoft.

Kind of like Microsoft pushing Edge, it really is quite worthless to me as it does not do what I care to do and I am not going to change my SOPs just to get in step with Microsoft.

Good luck.

No vendor is going to support something much longer than a decade, it would be naive to think otherwise and frankly who wants another WIndows XP type situation anyway.  Having digs at Microsoft is fine but look at Adobe, much of their professional software is now only available via subscription, at least Microsoft sells perpetual versions of Office with a one time purchase and will continue to do so.

You can continue to use Office 2007 for as long as you want, it's not advisable but the software won't suddenly stop working on October 11th! The exception is connecting to Office 365 mailboxes which won't work at the end of October.

End of life just means the software won't be supported anymore, no issues will be resolved with the software and you won't get the best experience going forward, as things may stop working over time.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, you can buy Office outright and bypass the whole subscription business with Office Home & Student 2016 or Office Home & Business 2016, while bigger businesses can still buy volume licence versions of Office.

Thank you for your response. I too am not happy with an annual fee. I'm all for change and upgrades but I thought I would have to quit using the computer. My social security barley covers rent and food so

going to a fee based system is out of the question. Just to respond I had to "join" Microsoft and I don't care for being told what will be chosen for me as in accessing my personal information; and saying

thank you for your buesiness' when I'm an individual. I didn't see a choice for Skype personal, just business. Not sure what I joined just to have a forum to respond to this site. I will be purchasing your recommendation. The only complaint I have about my Windows 10 is that its too sensitive. I spend more time going back to what I was doing then actually doing. The computer tries to anticipate my  next move and is often wrong. I like telling the computer what I want it to do not the adverse.

I agree with Dana Bashaw....on Social Security, Retired, Trying to keep up with modern computing is hard and is a never ending cost to us the individual.  I purchased Office 365 back last November 2016, it seemed to work great till M.S. uploaded an upgrade on September 3d, 2017....then everything "Office" quit working!  What is up with that?

I have Office 2007 and received a flash up message about withdrawal of support. In spite of all the messages below, about you can still use it, I understood the message to be saying that emails created in Outlook WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE SENT after October, rendering the whole email system useless. I have probably over 600 folders, sub-folders, sub-sub folders etc and maybe 50000 stored emails covering the very many things I am involved with. My partner has the latest version of Outlook and it is much much harder to see what level of folder you are in and it's just not as clear and well laid out. So all those people saying you can carry on using it without support, I don't think you can really if there is no email. Also I am very upset that I use picture manager on a daily basis, not specifically for photos but for other image files and I don't know what I will do without it as the new photo software only really applies to photo and not all image files. Or have I got this all wrong? HELP

You are right that Picture Manager isn't included in more recent versions of Office.  This article, however, shows apparently how it can be installed separately as a standalone app - Where is Picture Manager? depending on how useful that might be.

It's only if you have an Office 365 mailbox, like what comes with Office 365 Business Essentials (or any other plan that comes with Exchange), will email stop working.  If you use any other email service, this shouldn't be an issue, unless someone else can correct me.

Regarding Lesley's comment re:

"I understood the message to be saying that emails created in Outlook WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE SENT after October, "
I have asked the Technical team for clarification and they assure me they have no idea where this confusion arises, however they intend to contact registered users to clarify the situation. The version of Office on my PC has not been updated since 2004, yet still sends and receives E-mails whenever required. Could your EMail Server have generated this message?

Let's be clear what we are talking about, Office 2007 has had a decade of support!   Released in the same year, just to illustrate how long a go this was, the very first iPhone was launched.  Apple by the way completely stopped supporting the first iPhone in 2013, after cutting it off from OS upgrades after 2009, just as a sort of comparison.

Thank you, I just want some official clarification as to whether somehow, Microsoft 2007 Outlook will no longer be able to send and recieve emails. I am not concerned about the support angle, I have not needed any. I accept that at some point I do need to upgrade, but would like to do it in my own time, (when I can schedule it in to do the transfer and familiarise myself with the new features, layout, look etc,) and not have a deadline forced onto me with little warning, and only one pop-up notice to say that this is happening. An email notification from Microsoft would be most welcome, or a link to something official, clarifying it, as a pop up which you can't hang onto for future reference in support threads like this, is not helpful, it creates confusion and alarm. If the technical team can provide this I would be most grateful.

Microsoft already has an Office 2007 End of Life roadmap, that covers the essential information.  The main caveat around Outlook 2007 is the program will no longer connect to Office 365 mailboxes at the end of October.  This is only relevant to customers that use Exchange Online, like what comes with Office 365 Business Essentials.  For everyone else, this should not be a factor and email will continue to work as usual.

Office 2007, like all Microsoft products, has a support lifecycle during which we provide new features, bug fixes, security fixes, and so on. Although the product will continue to function, on October 10, 2017, Microsoft will no longer provide the following for Office 2007:

  • Technical support for issues
  • Bug fixes for issues that are discovered
  • Security fixes for vulnerabilities that are discovered

In addition, as of October 31, 2017, Outlook 2007 will be unable to connect to Office 365 mailboxes, which means Outlook 2007 clients using Office 365 will not be able to receive and send mail. For more information, see RPC over HTTP deprecated in Office 365 on October 31, 2017.

I am still using office 2007 which I own. before i consider upgrading to the new Office products. why is it you guys want yearly subscriptions. is this so you can make loads of money off us instead of providing one time purchases., office home and student does not include publisher, which I use a bit. we should be allowed to own software, not rent it. I hate the idea of renting software. that just rubs me the wrong way as a 26 year retired IT tech.

I paid for Office 365 for a few years until HALF the time I tried to use any of its programs it would "CHECK TO SEE IF MY LICENSE WAS CURRENT' and I would have to wait, and wait, and wait and half the time it would come back and say it couldn't verify my PAID FOR license, so I could NOT use the program.  Great! Paid for it but because Microsoft servers couldn't VERIFY my account I was locked out.  THAT is why I re-loaded my PAID FOR copy of Office 2007.  365 is not worth it because you can't use it half the time you need it.

One possibility could be to edit your firewall to block all incoming and outgoing connections to your 2007 programs... Malware could still potentially infect the programs through other means, but it'll keep your outdated programs safer.

Connecting with Microsoft experts on support.office.com is a great resource to address your concerns regarding your Office 365 subscription.

Unlike Office 2007, Office 365 ProPlus is a user-based service that allows consumers to access Office experiences on multiple PCs or Macs and on their mobile devices. Other benefits of the Office 365 subscription service include:

  • Always having the latest versions of your familiar Office applications, no matter which device you are using - PC/Mac, tablet, or phone
  • Enhanced security and compliance tools

Because Office 365 ProPlus is delivered as a service, there are differences in how you deploy, license, and activate it.  For more details about these differences, see the Office 365 ProPlus product page, Getting started guide for deploying Office 365 ProPlus, and Overview of Office 365 ProPlus.

I remember when it was expected by buyer and seller the product or service was yours, it worked, and the new models every year gave perks.... but we could still use our older things to our satisfaction. I'd kiss Microsoft's rear end if they could just take their heads out of the cloud for a moment, take a look around, and there is more to life than young, beautiful people throwing their money away so foolishly. Microsoft Office 2007 is not the only product/service that Microsoft (etc) has managed to convince government and citizen in every part of the world we must have this stuff. We can't function without it now! I am looking for a job, that is why I bought MS Office 2007 ten years ago, because MS Works, while I was content on it as my typewriter on steroids, I couldn't use it to apply for jobs. I wonder just how many cell phones, media formats, televisions, retired software programs, and one-sided power we are required to somehow purchase, learn, and discard, repeat, ad nauseam. Can you please tell me when I can expect to "retire" this next Office package? I only ask because the expiration date hasn't been on one single software or hardware I have purchased since the first time I heard the name Microsoft. (I can't afford Apple! Come on! Obama Care took all of my money this year! lol) PS Until the computer take over of the entire world, the rules and ethics were very different. Microsoft (etc) calls all the shots and apparently doesn't care what those of us over 25 want, need, or expect. I'm glad for everyone thinking as you apparently do (you've the Trump card.... **bleep**, that term used to means something too... shoot me!) that you didn't have to sell this BS to my grandfather! Now he was a good man! Thank you. I won't hold my breath that this trickles up and ol' Gates develops a Senior line that all the Junior has at least one USB Port to interface with us.
You can't seriously believe any of us have security since computers and data miners have basically cloned us all... I can't even prove I am me to the Social Security Administration, since last year when they took on Equifax as their gatekeeper. Oh the grand software and hardware they have. Who hasn't been hacked and compromised in shamefully massive breaches? At this point, I see the words "security and privacy" as sick propoganda. Have ya read the small print? I do. It's unAmerican!

The situation is worse. After a Windows 10 upgrade, my doc files became docx files. When I tried to open the files a pop up window asked for my product key. After entering my legally purchased Office 2007 product key the system came back to tell me it was not valid. Note that some of these files were saved in 2009 and before. Even though my office 2007 is still installed on my computer I couldn't access my own files personal files. I keep getting bombarded with pop ups to purchase office 365. I therefore cant even write a letter. I called Microsoft support and when the tech answers were not satisfactory, I asked to speak with a supervisor and they punished me by putting me on hold for 2 HOURS and then hang up on me. So its not just that 2007 has been retired, there is an aggressive strategy to force you off 2007 by "locking" your user created doc files if you don't move to office 365.

Edward, you have piqued my curiosity.

I'm not sure why an installation of Windows 10 , which is an operating system, should change the file type from one version to another. I also upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but all my .doc files saved in Word 97 under Windows 95, Word 2003 files saved under Windows XP and all subsequent .doc were still .doc files, and comfortable loaded into Word 2010 and Word 2011 for Mac. The files continue to be saved (save as) as .doc files. Hmmm...

The only way I can get the file type to change is to load a doc file into Word 2010. Then when saving it, responding to the option to save as a "docx" to use the enhanced facilities in Word 2010. If I click yes, the file is saved as docx, if I click no, it is saved as doc.

Hmmm. as I say, this is curious ... did you use a trial version of Office 2010?

Exactly my concern. Some of the files converted to .docx were created in 2002 and have not been opened since I created them so the chance erroneously saving as docx is zero. Secondly, those files transported between my job and home as doc files in order for me to be able to work on them at both locations. A few files could have slipped. I am not attributing this to Windows 10 updates but I ran into these issues after I installed those updates.
I don't have any choices now except to start paying so I can get my files back.

Edward ... according to this part of the Microsoft website, you can convert docx files created since Word 2007 to doc files for compatibility purposes ... I've never used this myself, but it has to be worth a try...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=3

The accompanying blurb says :

Install this compatibility pack if you would like to open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations that were created in the newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Scroll down to see instructions and system requirements.

Hope that helps.

Thanks.

Yes, the deprecation of RPC over HTTP has caused a lot of time spent with less than technical clients trying to help them get to the new version of software that they never felt they needed. Anyone using Hotmail, Live or other MSFT older email handles with Outlook 2007 have been put in a frustrating and time consuming experience. I had to give away a lot of free consulting time to avoid needless confusion and then help train people on the new product. Really a poorly thought out update by MSFT. A good solution here would have to have comped consultants with some kind of free support or something, for those of us who charged our clients zero for time spent on this aggravating process. I have never experienced anything like it with my clients using Apple products, Google Gmail, Google Docs or the like.

Curious: What old program was that?

Quicken 98 by Intuit. Originally run as a 16 bit program under Windows 95, but I had to create a virtual drive to run the 16 bit version under (I think) Windows XP.  Later, I found Intuit had provided both 16 bit and 32 bit versions on the original installation disk, so it was just a question of switching versions. I've since installed  Windows 7 professional (full version) and upgraded to Windows 10, but Quicken98 still works without any problem whatsoever.

There's nothing silly about it unless you like throwing your hard earned money in the dumpster.

The more "new and improved" things become the more one has to wait...
I had just wanted to upgrade to an newer version so that I could get the templates with it...such as 2016...I only actually use Word at this point...being officially retarded (oops...retired...grins)

I want to move MS Office 2007 from a 2004 Thinkpad XP to a new pc. I came to download but system does not accept my Product Key from the Thinkpad. Office was ore installed but I paid for it and have used it only on the Thinkpad.  How do I either copy Office 2007 or move it to a new of?

I want to move MS Office 2007 from a 2004 Thinkpad XP to a new PC.  I came to download but system does not accept my Product Key from the Thinkpad. Office was pre-installed but I paid for it and have used it only on the Thinkpad.  How do I either copy Office 2007 or move it to a new PC?  I do not want to be forced to pay again for another office suite when 2007 suits me fine.

I too want to install 2007 on a new pc. I bought it pre-installed on a 2004 XP Thinkpad. Never installed to another device and and it still suits me fine. Went to download with Product Key but it won’t download. I won’t be forced to buy new suite when this one is fine. I’ll buy a Mac first. Any help on where/how to get it on new laptop?

You might try seeing if a retirees group is in your area  (one is in mine). They often have original disks that you might be able to install on the new machine and use your sn again.

Also, MSFT offers Word as a part of the monthly Office 365 subscription service, very cheap.

And if you are a miltary retired person, I think that Office 365 or Office  is available for a discounted price.

Hope this helps.

Mike, if you buy a Mac you'll have to buy the Office suite again anyway. That won't save you money. You might see if there is a PC users group in your area. They might have original disks that you could install on your new machine and see if the license will work on it.

Also I think you can find them on ebay. I see a disk pack of it for $19.95 for sale today.

Office 365 online is quite cheap and up to date on the subscription service. The subscription is only 6.99 a month. Most people spend more than that on coffee.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

give up on paying for everything on windows.do a bit of research and. use any Flavor of ( Linux ) you will never get a virus  everything is good and free, and if you have any problems there is always someone who can help you for free. ps i don"t expect) windows will let me post this .

I use Word 2007 in my job as a transcriptionist.  Abruptly, yesterday, files worked on in Word 2007 could not be saved without first going through a message saying the the file would be upgraded to newer software and formatting, etc. might be affected.  It turns out that not only are the files 'upgraded', they then cannot be opened and have been corrupted.  Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so have you figured out how to work around it?

That was exactly my problem. I called Microsoft several times and they won't budge.  Its a shame to be denied access to your own files created with a product you dutifully paid for! But this is the route Microsoft decided to take. Its all about the $$$$. Eventually, I had no choice but to rent Office 365 for $10.65 a month. Now I can open word files even back to 1995!!!! Others have found alternative office products which works well.

Good Luck

It had to happen sometime.  MS has upgraded their Word program numerous times over the years.  However, they never seem to get it quite right.  Want better editing? Want to publish to PDF without having to purchase a separate program? Want all around better word processing? Try Corel Word Perfect X8.  It has it all.  Corel also upgrades but each time the product out does Word.  Hands down!

I'm a retiree and generally save recipes - nothing important.  Now I can copy, paste, type, but am no longer allowed to save.  It always tries to configure then closes down.  Help please.

Let's be clearer here.  We're not talking about Apple and their iPhones, and by extension we're not talking about Apple iOS.  This is Microsoft software, no legitimate comparison.  There are many reasons we use MS systems and software rather than Apple's systems and software.  (I chose Microsoft in 1985, starting with MS-DOS 2.11 on my Heath/Zenith 161 PC-compatible kit (Intel 8088 system), and still believe in Microsoft as the best choice for me.)

I, too, detest subscription online software, usually working offline for various reasons.  Today I became frustrated by <F1> taking me to notice "Office 2007 is now retired, Update to a newer Office version to get product support."  I thought "Help Files" were available within the Office 2007 software, not an external link.  What's up with this?

No you are blocked after so many uses. They are trying to force you to give up. I bought it it is mine and I should be able to use it. End of story. Oh and to uninstall the 365 bull**bleep** doen's work either. They have spys that won't let you... Just sayin
