Microsoft Government Tech Summit – Washington D.C. l March 5-6

For two invigorating days this March, Microsoft hosted nearly 2000 customers, partners and associates at the Government Tech Summit - an annual technical learning and practice event for IT professionals.

Attendees gained insight into the latest developments that are shaping the future of modern government – and how they can take advantage of Microsoft’s trusted cloud platform to help them lead their organization through digital transformation. It was inspirational to see the eagerness of government technologists advance their agency’s IT modernization to better serve citizens and further its mission.

We kicked off the Summit with a Women in Technology breakfast panel featuring trailblazing government technology leaders who shared their innovation journey and experiences. More than 162 conference attendees gathered to hear from panelists, including Julia White, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Azure & Security Marketing, Karen Evans, National Director, U.S. Cyber Challenge, Maria Roat, Chief Information Officer, Small Business Administration, and Carmen Middleton, Deputy Executive Director, CIA (Retired).

During the opening keynote session, Paul Lorimer, Office 365 Distinguished Engineer, shared how government agencies can empower a technology-based modern workplace. Maria Roat, CIO for the Small Business Administration (SBA), joined him in a discussion covering Federal IT trends, SBA goals and initiatives, and the collaboration between the SBA and Microsoft teams.

 

Key product announcements included the availability of Microsoft 365 for US Government which enables mobile productivity and secure collaboration with unique government compliance, as well as new Enterprise Mobility + Security solutions to Microsoft 365 GCC High and Azure Government, featuring identity protection, mobile device and application management, document and message encryption, and conditional access capabilities.

Julia White, Corporate Vice President for Azure and Security Marketing, followed up with a compelling discussion on how this year is becoming the tipping point for federal government IT modernization and how cloud technology will be central to this change. Julia talked about how Microsoft is already unique in providing consistent, comprehensive hybrid cloud capabilities to government, and how this game-changing hybrid solution that delivers consistency across public, government-only, and on-premises cloud environments enables advanced services to power government’s tactical missions and make the intelligent edge a reality.

Day two began with an insightful discussion on Empowering Federal IT’s Move to the Cloud, led by Susie Adams, Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Federal. During the general session, Susie provided insights into how agency leaders are taking advantage of the Modernizing Government Technology Act to propel outdated federal IT systems into the 21st century, while promoting productivity and strengthening cybersecurity. She also discussed two key enablers that are driving the journey to the cloud, including an evolved security model and a digital transformation roadmap.

The Microsoft Government Tech Summit featured a variety of immersive sessions, including an all-day Azure Government Hackfest where attendees were able to experiment with Microsoft’s trusted cloud platform. IT Pros took advantage of the experts on hand to help them innovate with capabilities such as artificial intelligence, big data and advanced analytics, IoT, cognitive services, blockchain, and productivity and digital workplace technologies. Solutions experts also hosted a series of government technology sessions and hands-on workshops featuring Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Security.

The Hub was a hive of activity with Microsoft Partners, Theater Sessions, On-Demand Labs, Microsoft Expert Center and Community Central where attendees could ask questions and learn about products and programs.

 

The Microsoft in Government Partner Summit garnered more than 70 attendees who gained new insights into how to drive faster deployments while accelerating cloud business opportunities. Partners participated in deep dives on Microsoft’s government cloud solutions while learning about 2018 partner-centered investments.
