I'm an educator using Teams for my classroom. In the Assignments tab, my students submit Word documents. I do not like Word Online and prefer to read/edit them in my desktop version of Word. When I attempt to open the file in Word from Teams, it always attempts to open Word twice. It then either gives me two windows with the same file that are both Read-Only or it gives me one that is Read-Only and one that is saving back to the network. This is getting kind of frustrating as I would like Teams to just launch Word once, normally and have it save. I've updated both Teams and Word, that is not the issue. I'm on Windows 10, using the desktop Teams app. Has anyone experienced this issue and know of a solution?

In my experience (and I'll state the obvious) you are experiencing an unusual event when it opens Word twice when launching in the app from Teams.

 

The file opening in the Word app as read-only tends to happen when you open the doc in preview in Teams (Word online) and then click Edit > Edit in Word. The file is locked as Word online has it open (happens for me too). 

 

As I recall, other experts on the forum say you should still be able to edit in Word online and the app, except if you have an Office version that isn't the latest.

 

I also find closing the Word file in Teams and giving it 5 minutes to clear unlocks the Word file. You could also try opening the file in the Word app via the Files tab using the ... options instead of viewing the file first in Teams (Word online).

 

Not sure how to solve your double launch issue, but you could try changing the site/library settings in SharePoint to launch in the app instead of Online. See if this works for you?

 

Try going to Library Settings > Advanced Settings > Opening documents in the browser and see the screen below. This will change the way the library settings work.

If you want to do it globally, Site Settings > Site collection features > Open documents in client applications by default and click Activate.

Thanks for your response.

Regarding the Read-Only explanation, that makes sense. Unfortunately, I have no other way to open the file within Teams. Student submitted work through the Assignments tab does not appear in the Files tab on Teams. I have to go through the Assignments tab and the only way to open the document in the Assignments tab is to open it in Word Online first. I can then launch Word through Word Online.

It is possible for me to dig into SharePoint and find the student files and open them there, but that is really not practical and defies the purpose of using Teams imo.

 

I tried modifying the settings as you described in SharePoint and that hasn't changed the behaviour of Teams at all.

It automatically opens the file in Word Online.

It opens Word twice. One of the windows generally works and the second window either opens the file as Read-Only or gives me this message. Occasionally, both windows open the file as Read-Only and I have to close them both and try launching Word from Teams again. Sometimes I have to do this 4-5 times before it will open a window that isn't Read-Only.

I would say that this is unusual behaviour and I would suggest having your admin log a support ticket with Microsoft.

 

Whilst I can understand why you wouldn't want to use SharePoint to get around the issues you are facing, I might suggest that you bookmark the assignment location in SharePoint and use that when there's trouble (it may save you the 4-5 times loading a doc)!

 

The only other option I can think of is in your SharePoint Library settings > Versioning Settings and setting Require checkout to No. That may stop the read-only issues.

First, there's a dedicated space for Teams for Education, better to ask these quiestions there since EDU features like assignments aren't available for business & enterprise, users which sometimes can cause confusion.

 

That said, this is a bug I've seen before. Was this ever fixed @Justin Chando?
