I like the Wiki addition in Microsoft Teams, but what I miss is a search option!? I think this is real miss. How can you build a knowledge base and have no option to search in it?

Or am I missing something here?!

What do you mean by search in the Wiki?
MS Teams allows for search on Messages, People, Files but the search feature doesn't seem to search Wiki content

Exactly, see attachment. I see no option to search through the Wiki content.  I think this is almost a bug since, what if our Wiki has 1000 articles and you can't search in it? What kind of knowledge base is that...

@Dan Stevenson You've been looking for feedback on Wiki, here you go :)

Glad to see I'm not the only one wondering where this feature is

We currently rely heavily on the SharePoint wiki for documentation.  I was at first excited that MS Teams had a built-in wiki, but then I realized it was very basic and hard to use.  I was demoing MS Teams to another team member and was showing him the Search functionality when I realized the wiki was not searchable.  This was almost embarrasing.  I don't think my team members will fully adopt MS Teams until the wiki is improved.  I will post the other issues with it in separate threads.

This is essential. Not being able to retrieve Wiki content via the Search box in Teams, or Delve for that matter, renders the Wiki feature useless.

It's a must-have feature.

Hi everyone, please show Microsoft how much we want this feature by voting here on User Voice. Microsoft is getting plenty of requests for features, but this is one we really want and need in our organization.

Out of all the other responses, yours was the one i was waiting for. Cheers.

Hi Sarveen, I'm glad I could help. Now I just hope that Microsoft finishes this soon :)

At the first time, I found the TEAMS wiki also hard to use. But today, I love it to use. I can't say, there are now new feature, or I have learned now, how to use the feature.
This is exactly what I want to do with my Teams Wiki - create a knowledgebase (like Wikipedia). Without a (Wiki limited) search capability it's pretty useless in delivering this.

I'm finding that when I conduct a search that hits a Wiki page, that Teams's response is to download the .MHT rather than to display it the browser or Teams app.  Is this what you're experiencing also?

Yes. We have abandoned using the Wiki here. I don't know how you are supposed to use a wiki you cannot search. I get launching a product that is not finished, but launching without a key feature?

Technically, it meets the usual definition - a website where users can collaboratively modify content - but if you cannot search it, it is as useful as a printed encyclopedia with no index and where all of the entries are in a random instead of alphabetical order.

i came here wondering if there is an update on this.

not haveing a search on wiki content makes the entire Teams product usless for us..

:(

Well, I wouldn't recommend Teams as a product choice for anyone who is looking to buy a Wiki! It's a minimal helper feature, the logic of it's inclusion in the product is still a little confusing, OneNote still seems to be a better option for me.

The weird thing is now search in Teams will find content in a Wiki. When you click on it though, you get a prompt to download a .MHT file instead of taking you to the wiki. Makes no sense. Totally half baked right now.

I really want to like this Wiki in MS Teams - we are moving our entire organization to Teams very soon, and I have pitched the idea of Wiki for capturing our processes! It's unfortunate we can't search!!! Huge miss! I have voted via the link provided by @Scott Winn, and hope this comes soon!!

The one thing I can think of for now, is that it does allow for categorization, and shows all replies and new topics in the navigation bar. Additionally, if anyone makes a comment in chat regarding this topic, this text then becomes searchable - takes you to the conversation, but leads to the right wiki area.

I have to continue down this path of using the Wiki in Teams, but an improvement in this area to be able to search would be GREAT!

I wholeheartedly agree that the Teams wiki pages need search functionality.  PLEASE add this as soon as possible.  I just sold my company on this platform and now we can't search.  Ouch.

Did you ever find a solution to this?
I need to create a page of announcements, but will require a search function.
Currently can't find an alternative to using a wiki.
If you just need a place to post announcements that can be searched, you can edit the General channel so that only owners can post messages. Then you can use the General channel only for announcements and organize the other channels for everything else. I actually found this by accident while trying to fix another problem :) We can't rename or edit the General channel yet, but this can be a workaround until we get search in the Wiki and more control over the channels/tabs.

Did you ever find a solution to this?
I need to create a page of announcements, but will require a search function.
Currently can't find an alternative to using a wiki.

We still use OneNote for this. It is editible, and searchable in both Teams and Delve. Just create a tab that points to your OneNote notebook, or create a tab that creates a new OneNote notebook.

OneNote also has the advantage of retaining page version history that is easy to see as changes are made over time.

I don't think MS is much interested in Wiki. It was kind of thrown out there, then never really touched. I don't understand how you create an unsearchable wiki. It is a bit like creating a word processor that has no spell check.

Hi Ed,

Can you please provide more detail on how searching OneNote in Teams works for you?

I have added several OneNote notebooks and sections as tabs within Teams, but I never get any search results when using the search/command bar in Teams.

Are you doing the searches directly in Teams, or opening the notebooks from Teams and then searching in the OneNote client?

The search is ok.

  • Search for your text
  • Select the "files" tab.
  • A notebook will show up (assuming a hit)
  • Click on the notebook.
  • Open the notebook
  • Search again in the notebook.

The 2nd search is needed because Teams won't take you to the specific page with the search terms.

Searching with Delve is the same.

Almost all of our notebooks in Teams were created in Sharepoint for the channel so it was an honest to goodness OneNote notebook file. I never could grok how those half-baked "onenote tabs" you create in teams work. Once you create a notebook via Sharepoint, you can go back to Teams and create a onenote tab and tell it to use an existing file, then click on the notebook file you created.

I guess in a way that makes sense. If you search for an text in an Excel file, it will find the file and let you open it, but you'll need to search in Excel again to find the specific cell the search term is in.

Much better than a Wiki search. Teams will find the wiki, and when you click on it, you download a MHT file, which is a complied html file, which is 100% useless.

Just wow. How did the dev's not realize people would need a search ability?

You can't even CTRL-F, not that it would help much if things were in different sections.

But a wiki is completely useless without a search.

This feature is a MUST HAVE in 2018 Collaboration Tool.

Hi, seems this has not been resolved yet. Have you found an alternative solution for your wiki/knowledge database?

thanks

I haven't, but honestly I've not tried in quite some time.

It was a must have back in the 90's (with Lotus Notes, etc.)

Lack of search is unfathomable.

+1 on all above

Searching Wiki Content should be possibly at least from the main search bar within Teams but a dedicated search in a wiki would make it also easier (to exclude search results outside of it).

Really surprised that not even the main search is working yet, it seems such basic core functionality needed for a content related site. Welcome to 2019.

When will this be fixed?!?!  I'm having to migrate off media wiki onto MSTeams and the lack of core wiki functionality is appalling.  Is there a simple cross content linking ability I'm not aware of also?

Hi Guys, I do not know you, but I feel really frustrated.
There is not a good option to collaborative work on the net.
We are new here on Microsoft, and there is not find for the Wiki´s, notification of news seem to not work on IOS mobiles, etc.

Somebody could give Us a good idea, We feel bad. If We choose another platform, We have problems with the edition of words, excels, etc.

Thank you,
Mariano
What about a shared OneNote? Using a SharePoint page as news , working on mobile etc..

@adam deltinger Hi Adam ! Thank you for the answer. I will check it out.

It is hard to understand how dev teams lose the focus on the needs.

It deal breaker for us.. We are using teams since 8 months, we are creating content in Wiki tons and tons of them....but not able to find....then no point using team...

It is getting to the point that we need to find some other alternative....

I think it would be easier if MS would just rename it. Don't add search, just call it a Voonex, which is hereby defined as "Same thing as a Wiki, but not searchable."

Problem solved.

Agreed, this is preposterous. In the meantime, how would/do you use Teams as a knowledge base tool?

I am designing current best practice in an Engineering org that has adopted Teams, for better or worse. I read someone's idea a while back for a workaround to not use the Wiki, but to consolidate all of a Team's Wikis into a channel therein called "Wiki", and use subject headers, markup, and edit capability to author your now-searchable content in every top post in the channel. I'm inclined to use this approach for now instead of proliferating content in such dark corners as Teams Wikis.

Do you have thoughts on this approach, or have any other suggestions for workarounds _using Teams today_?

@Tim Black

I have found, well, it's not so bad. Yes, I want to search everything in wiki, and just find it. But after some time, and building out each team, we use if for different purposes.

In a development team, we're keeping all our documented processes in one place. this has been the BEST. We just drop it in, it's not another file to find, and we can sort and categorize where we need....all we have to say is "it's in the wiki" - and they can go find it.

I want to be able to search, but after using Teams now consistently, it's transforming our business. Try using meetings and chat through teams. It's actually very good.

Thanks @Tiffney Keller. I assume you're implying that "they go find it" when they're told "it's in the wiki" by browsing the structure and using intuition or asking someone for specifics. I'm not yet comfortable with requiring co-workers (esp new hires!) to have the implicit knowledge to find things this way. To me it's like asking them to have a diving rod to find water. It's quite counter-intuitive for modern developers to not be able to just search for it. Relying on folder- or wiki- structure is soo 1996.

That said, I agree completely with you about the value of a Single Source of Truth. At this point, though, I'm more inclined to use a OneNote tab rather than the built-in Wiki.

I totally agree with you on a OneNote tab where specifics are inclined, especially in a new-hire situation. OneNote can get just as busy as a Wiki can, but it has way more capacity, and of course, search. If you have large scale documentation, then OneNote is the way to go, or, just save all that in files, and @mention it in the wiki of where to find it.

From a program perspective, it allows me to say look - new team member - I don't have formal training, we don't need all that - but our team has documented every step with either a video, or written steps to achieve the new task you've been assigned to do.

How many times have you had leadership say..."where are your documented processes?"
We don't have to think about creating "documents" anymore - we just add it to a new story, and anything new we learn, we throw it in there as a team. It cuts down on ramp-up time for sure. Where you put it just depends on your scale - for small teams, this Wiki works just fine.
Did you get an answer About the Search? Also there is no print function either.
Multi billion dollar company. I laugh when I see new enhancements given that search still doesn’t work two years later. WOW! All I want to do is search in one wiki having multiple sections. Still using Confluence in the meantime.
