We are going to be deploying Teams soon and a question came up.

How will conversations of a terminated employee appear in teams?

 

We will be testing this scenario in the coming days but I thought maybe I could get an answer from the community.

Did you get anywhere with this? This post was the only mention of dealing with terminated employees.

 

Also, I still see terminated employees show up in the address list when sending a new message. I have removed their license, but they still show in the teams "gal". Any idea what to do with them?

Hello Matt - thank you for sending that helpful link over! I do have one issue - our organization does not delete any users from Office 365/Azure when they are terminated (for a few reasons). We simply remove the E3 license that is assigned to them.

 

Is there any way to remove them from the Teams directory without deleting the Office 365 account?

The behavior should be the same when removing the license and not the account - but I'll test that today and reply back to let you know what that does to conversations/chat history. In addition, if you remove the license, they will remain in the GAL (and thus remain in the Teams "directory" but will need to test that as well). Lastly, I'm curious why you don't remove the account completely from O365?

Thanks for the reply and link, we went live a while ago and we noticed the behaviour as described in your blog.

 

We don't actually "delete" the employee, we let AD do the dirty job ;)

Yes we are changing the status of the user's account in AD on premises and letting the sync handle it.

I just tested this, removed the license from the user but did not delete the user. Their name still appears in Teams, and in private chat their name appears and is not displayed as 'unknown user' like we saw when the user is deleted. Their name is still visible in the GAL and thus still visible in Microsoft Teams.

I have the same issue - people whose mailboxes we must preserve by policy, who have no E3 license, are "shared" users, show up as potential members, etc. in Teams.  This is a frustration.  Is there a solution, hello microsoft?

Yes, we also do not delete all accounts immediately as I would imagine would be the case for many organizations. This is unacceptable. We need to have a way to hide former employees from Teams the same way we can hide users from the Exchange/Outlook GAL
