Can I point a team in Teams to an existing SPO document library, instead of having a new one created automatically?

The following question may be related to the one above, so I'll add it here: Is there any foreseeable problem in giving a team the same name as an SPO document library?

No you cannot change the default group site associated to the Team, which includes the default document library.

You can add additional tabs and or "Cloud Storage" to your existing Team pointing to another SharePoint library however.
A new library is always created in the corresponding team site when a group/team is created! You can always create a tab and link to other libraries or have it as a folder in the files tab directly by choosing “cloud storage” - sharepoint
Deja vu feeling here! I guess 2 answers is always better than 1 though :)

Where is the document library? if it's in a site that could be converted to a group site then you could add Teams to the group.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/dev/transform/modernize-connect-to-office365-group

I didn't understand your response, in the context of my question.

I have an existing SP online site working well based on build 16.0.11203.35051 (taken from Excel on the same O365 subscription) which I would like to connect to a brand new Teams 'channel'.

Can I add Teams to an existing site?

Thanks

If its a team site based on a Office 365 group tou can create a team on top!
A coupe of ways to do this but simplast is if you create a new ream from teams and choose - create from existing group
You can’t connect it to a specific channel though! But you can add the library as a tab in a channel or add it as cloud storage in the files tab

Its a Communication Site. This makes a difference?

Yes! Com sites don’t utilizes Office 365 groups, therefore not doable

Unacceptable!!  Why does MSFT make good stuff that isn't brilliant!!!  This sort of thing keeps people in the Google camp.

Is there some update I might look for that fixes this debacle?

Comm sites are used very differently than group sites! That’s why :)
Comm sites are what the name says! Team sites are used for collaboration! And teams uses the underlaying group for many things including the membership and files
They are looking to make it so you can what they call "Groupify" a communication site down the road, but nothing anytime soon. Once a site is "Groupified" then you can add a Team to it.

I understand you don't architect this stuff, but that answer is one from a politician.  If I want to add collaboration to a well used Comms site, I can't.  But the request is a reasonable one from the PoV of an organisation.
If I create a new site based on Teams are you suggesting I can't add features (libraries and apps) found in a Comms site?  My quick research shows I can.  If I am correct, and I might not be, I can't see any fundamental tech reason not to back Teams into Comms

Thanks for that response

I just have to reply 'aaaagggghhhhh!!!!'

I've been using MSFT stuff since 1979 - this always seems to be the path.

You can attach the library to another team but not create a team on top of the comm site

Thanks

I'll get one of my devs to look at that

Oh, I was aware of groupifying classic team sites but not comm sites as well!
You can do anything you want with a Team SharePoint site that a comm site does. The only difference is the group connection and the top navigation vs. the left hand quick launch bar nav. Team sites are getting an update in the near future where you can get the same top navigation on it.

Group sites actually have more functionality than Comm sites in that they have access to all the group web parts that can connect to other resources etc.
I could be wrong but I thought them mumble something about looking into it at some point at ignite.
