Do you happen to have an ETA on the release of this? We have many users asking for this as well.

Is this on the roadmap somewhere? Would be good to have access to the item so we can stay up to date on progress?

I’ve come up with a workable solution for the Channels permissions issue. It’s a bit of round-about solution, but it works just fine until MS has something more permanent. I wrote a how-to guide in an article with screenshots.

I was wondering if it is possible to restrict members in a team from creating a channel?
I know how to restrict the ability to create a Team. I would now like to restrict channels.

Any idea when this future will be available?
In my opinion it's a must, besides it make more sense to create a channel when access restrictions are needed, rather than creating new group with the new site in SharePoint. Soon we would end up with dozens of sites, what would make SP unusable, definitely a nightmare for admins

Totally agree. Teams is currently very static and any temporary, smaller or fixed time limit groups and teams will just use Slack.

Yeah, of course, sorry. It's the same issue raised up-thread. If we have a Team set up for 30+ people but want a restricted channel for people within that who are working on a sub-project, it can't be done currently. Everyone in the 30 gets access. We'd have to create a whole new Team for them but this isn't ideal and because of how it is set up here is a bit laborious.
I understand private channels are being worked on though. That'd be a good feature.

Just this moment seen that you can set up separate chats and add tabs to them. Don't know how I missed that. Does pretty much what I need it to for now. Soz

We have 150 members in an O365 Team's – and we create an additional Channel within the Team, and can we restrict access to the Channel or the Files in the Channel to a sub-set of people in the Team.

Not really! A solution is being work upon for this by Microsoft though!
There is no way to set permission on a channel, BUT you can edit the SharePoint permissions for the files tab ( the corresponding channel folder in SharePoint) This will not remove the files tab but there will be a no access message for those who don't have access!
I suggest not messing with the teams folders themselves but rather create a new library and set explicit permissions on that. Then add it as cloud storage or as a SharePoint library tab!
You could also use a group chat for people sharing more confidential content

Another good alternative is to create a separate team and choose team members there.
The ups: you can have chats on channels and have channel meetings & scheduling
The downs: once/if the private channels roll out -> you can't combine these into one team
However you can have a structure with two teams
- chats and files
- access to these files is only given to specific people
- you can add Open Team document library here too
- you can use different AIP labels here and create other rules for content if needed
- everyone is inside this team
- files here can be used and accessed by all team members
- they don't even have to know about the other team (unless they have access)
Of course you need to state the purpose of these teams to people who are in both. What to talk about and where. But using two different teams can actually help here.
@adam deltinger approach is also good if you only need to restrict some files.

Is there an estimated completion date on enabling access restrictions for channels within a Team? It appears they've been working on this for a year now....
