Should the TEAMS search functionality find files that are in the File tab of a TEAMS Chat?  It currently does not do so in the Tenant that I am on and I need to  know if this is as it should be or if there is a higher level admin setting that has not been switched on.

I know these files are stored in my OneDrive unlike those in the Files tab of a Channel which are in SharePoint but I do not believe that this should make a difference.

Regards all

Gary

Your're right! They are located in OneDrive which means technically you could be able to search in Teams for the files located in "files" tab in private chat, - that you shared! It doesn't though and there is no setting for this!

A reason for this also i think is that search wouldn't make i difference of the files you shared in chat and other files you have in your OneDrive not related to Teams!

Good morning Adam

Would you mind clarifying the second paragraph of your reply?

Regards

Gary

Of course;

To find the files you have in your private chats, the search engine needs to search your OneDrive! This means that search results wouldn't be related to teams files only, but also all your other files within OneDrive that matches your search!

You have to separate the service Teams with the different teams themselves..Teams as a service offers chat - and chats aren't directly connected to any teams or team files! So use OneDrive to search for files you have in chat and use teams search when you need to find files related to a team/teams

Adam is right, but they should extend the search bar to act like the search bar from Office 365 portal page that also searches OneDrive and any content you have, with a filter to restrict it to Teams only if you wanted. My gut tells me that this is probably in the works. In fact I'll bring it up in the AMA in a few weeks :).

As for finding chat files. Your best bet would be trying to use the portal.office.com search OR you could just go to your OneDrive via files tab in Teams then click OneDrive then the "Open in OneDrive" link. From here on the left menu go to the Shared Menu and then you can basically see the files that are in Teams chat file tabs here since they are basically shared files from other users in the chat onedrive.
