I'm repeatedly receiving the "Sorry, we couldn't find your file." error. I have tried adding the file from OneDrive and also from my local machine, still receive the same error. It is not just Word Documents but also with Powerpoint as well.

Does anyone have a solution for this? I did not see many threads referencing this issue which makes me think that I may be doing something wrong.

Thanks,

I was about to post something similar, but I know the root cause of my issue... did someone perhaps change the name of your file library on the sharepoint site?

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the response. I spoke with my System Admin and he said that nothing was changed besides just the initial setup. Is there any way to check into this?

Also, It works on the iPhone app, just not on my desktop machine.  65bit, Windows 10.

Thaknks

Hi Maurice

Have you tried to reset the OneDrive on your desktop, if not please reset OneDrive using following steps. Hope this helps

  1. Press the Windows key + R.

  2. In the Run window, enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

  3. Click OK.

  4. Make sure the OneDrive icon in the notification area of the taskbar disappears and then re-appears after a minute or two. Here’s how to check: Right-click the white OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.

(You might need to click the Show hidden icons arrow next to the notification area to see the OneDrive icon.)

  5. If the OneDrive icon doesn’t re-appear after a few minutes, open the Run window again and enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

Has there been any solution to this?  I had an issue with OneDrive, which I thought would sole my Teams issue.  In short, Onedrive was completly removed (folders, reg, etc) and reinstalled.  i am still getting the error.

I can open documents in Word Online, ShrePoint, and Download.  The Teams File Viewer doesn't work. Wierd thing is that some documents open fine.  Others, not so much.

Hi Bob

I have exactley the same problem , i have reset re-installed one-drive  , reuploaded the files and still no joy trying to access them through Teams files.

Cheers

Brad

Hey guys,

As per my knowledge, whatever you upload on Microsoft Teams it actually uploads that file in your SharePoint. If you delete that folder, (which is connected to your Teams Channel) Teams will not avle to upload your files unless untill you don't create new folder there.

Note: It is possible to delete your source folder from SharePoint and your Microsoft Teams will never know that.

I would like to ask you, are you able to see your files, in files section at your channels.

Do following steps this may help you to solve your problem.

Open your Microsoft Teams and Channel -  Click on three ellipses (...) next to your channel's name - See if you can find your files there.

If you find your files there then it is some bugs

If you don't find any files there, please let me know I will help you.

Thank you

Hi Asjad,

Yes my files are all there, i can see them all in the Sharepoint library and access them from Sharepoint.

Cheers

Brad

Probably there will be folders with the name of your channel's name.

Please check that files are in a folder of your channel's name or somewhere else.

Asjad,

I don't believe you are understanding.  The MS Teams folders are available in SharePoint.  The proper rights are assigned.  If you choose to "Open in SharePoint", the SharePoint site opens fine.  All of the files are listed there properly.  If I open the file from the SharePoint site, the file opens perfectly.  The file will not open within MS Teams.

Side note.  I opened a ticket with O365 Support and was told that MS Teams is still in a "Preview Release", so they are not able to help me at all.  The technician stated that there are things are may not work properly at this time while still in "Preview".  The only suggestion was to click on the lightbulb in Teams to go to the uservoice website.  They apologized for the inconvenience, so I've got that going for me.  Which is nice.

By chance, had anyone updated their UPN when this problem started?  Our problem seems to line up to when this happened.  We are syncing from our local AD. The local domain is not a public domain and does not have a public DNS entry (Internal>corp.company.com, external>company.com). A short time ago, we noticed that we were unable to get Skype for Business to work outside our O365 tenant. I found that it was due to the domain, since it does not have a public DNS entry.  I updated my UPN to our email domain, which has the correct DNS entries.  SFB worked! I checked O365, Exchange, Skype.  All of them updated to reflect my new UPN (after some replication time).  All seemed good!

I am now finding that this may be part of my issue with Teams?  When Teams opens a file from within one of my private chats, it seems to look at my SharePoint My Site. Since my UPN changed, so did my 'My Site' address.  I don't think this fully explains the Team files, since those have a completely dedicated site for each team.  I can open SharePoint just fine and find the files exactly where they should be, so my rights seem to have updated properly across the systems.  I can open the files from SharePoint just fine.

We did find that, within a team, if we chose to Download the file from teams to our local desktop.  Then upload the file to Teams with a new name.  The file can then be opened from within Teams once again. Both files are now there in SharePoint.  Both files can be opened from SharePoint.  Only the new file can be opened from within Teams.

Hi Bob

This is very similar to my issue, i updated the domain and soon after started to experience the issue. I tested with re-uploading a remanmed file and it works, but not if i re-upload with the same name.

Cheers

Brad

Hey Bob,

Sorry for misunderstanding your problem, i hope you will get solution soon from Microsoft. Please do share when you get any solution from Microsoft.

Thank you for writing.

I went through the teams and downloaded the documents, deleted the files online through sharepoint, then uploaded the files.  The files seem to be fixed now.  Only problem is that the upload doesn't take folders, which really shouldn't be there anyway, but we can't get the users to understand that quick enough.  So far, so good.  Just had a password reset cycle and I am not sure if that re-broke things.

Wish someone from Microsoft could lend a suggestion.  Removing and Re-adding the documents seems a little unorthodox.

Hi, I have had this problem too for a long time now - some Office files on my OneDrive folders on desktop (Windows) would sync to OneDrive online and could be opened there but would not open from the desktop folders. Trying to open them would result in the "Sorry, we couldn't find your file..." error message and then Excel/Word/PPT crashing.

Today I discovered a solution that works; The issue turned out to be too long search strings / file names. Shortening names on parent folders resolved the issue for me.

Can you provide the details of the solution you found for this issue?

Sure.

To specify the problem:

When trying to open an MS Office file from the folder structure in the File Explorer, enabled by the OneDrive app in Windows 10, I sometimes get the error message "Sorry, we couldn't find [full search string of file]. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?" Hitting OK repeats the message and the next hit on OK just opens a blank file.

Cause of error:

The problem seems to lie in the length of the search string when including "C:\Users\..." through the file name and e.g. "...abc.xlsx". When the full length is above 218 characters (based on experiments), an office file cannot be opened from the File Explorer.

Solution/Workaround:

Moving the file to a folder further up in the structure or to the desktop resolves the issue. Files can also always be opened in the web browser. Nowadays this finding has adapted how we work in OneDrive, keeping folder trees as flat/shallow as possible and folder and file names as short as possible to ensure short search strings.

do you have any punctuation characters in the name of the ondrive folder, e.g. OneDrive-Contoso, LLC? if so remove the comma, it can cause problems like this.

No, no punctuations. Moreover, if that had been the cause of the problem, shortening a file name would not have been a workaround. As I said, the problem lies in the length of search strings, not the content of them.

"Sorry, we could not find your file," started showing up after a couple of months of displaying Office 365 documents that were added to a tab in a Teams channel (i.e. Word Excel PPT files).  The office document files are stored in a SharePoint document repository and the repository was added to the channel's file tab.  In Late 2018 the "+" feature to add a tab containing office documents from the linked SharePoint document repository stopped working properly, and does not work as of this posting.

Alternate approach to add a channel tab with an office document "view".... 1) add the SharePoint repository to the file tab for the channel.  2) open the files tab.  3) drill down to the file location from within Teams>channel > files(tab).  4) each document has a menu on the far right.  5) click the "Add to Tab" menu option.

The file is now added to a tab as Teams documentation describes.

The same file will still fail if it is added via the "+" tab feature of a channel
