We have an executive direction to roll out teams for the enterprise just for basic chat using IM and audio / video capabilities. My questions:

1) has any one rolled out Teams just for above.

2) Teams also serves as a gateway to too many features /capabilities. (SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Video, Planner, etc...) Is there a way to control enabling these features at a tenant level? Which features can be controlled and which cannot be controlled?

3) As a next step is there a way to open up these services through the use of scripts to specific users? Controlling access through the admin interface for a large organization with adhoc requests may be painful.

4) What approach have companies taken to establish governance and support structure around the supporting features of Teams?

Appreciate any direction, pointers to documentation and clarity that can be shed on these...

Best!

Hi!

I’ve had customers use it primary for this purpose but not restricted it like you said

Like you said teams includes a lot of other services! These are controlled in different ways! All files management is dependent on sharepoint! This can not be turned of from teams but it can be disabled for users license wise! The experience isn’t great though because the files tab is still there so users can be confused, and people can’t share files in chat!
Same goes for other services! By removing license you can restrict their use!

For exchange please see here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/exchange-teams-interact

There are also settings and features within teams you can turn off by teams policy’s like possibility to add external cloud storage, meeting policy’s, apps etc
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/enable-features-office-365

As said above this can be restricted by licenses, which can be controlled by powershell scripts, dynamic groups etc! Currently for teams policy’s the teams and Skype admin portal is the way to go!

Licensing with powershell:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/enterprise/powershell/assign-licenses-to-user-accounts-wi...

Group based licensing:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/users-groups-roles/licensing-group-advanced

For governance in teams ease refer to the following document:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/plan-teams-governance

With all this said, I really don’t recommend stripping if all this features! Teams loses much of its functionality and strength as a collaboration tool!
It might be better to inform users of how they should use it, in what purposes, and what content that teams is for!

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the response. I am in agreement with your approach and that's what I have seen in the past. In this case my hands on ground are a bit tied.

All the personnel have the same E3 license. So controlling features by assigning a type of license may not be possible.

Are there ways to restrict use of features with the same E3 license? Meaning selectively enable features for personnel. Default being a everyone only gets chat and conference(as in skype).

Also the governance guide is a good starting point, is there a detailed cook book of sorts, that accounts for governance around all the O365/Teams features...

Thank you

Hi!
You can create policy’s in the teams and Skype admin center! It’s more teams specific settings but there’s a few options to turn on/off if you want! Also you can set app/cloud storage restrictions etc

You can also have some control by removing licenses for Office365 services you don’t want users to run in Teams! Don’t recommend doing this though!

Is it anything specific you want to restrict?? And why?

Regarding governance there is this governance documentation about the whole office 365 groups ecosystem:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/create-groups/plan-for-groups-governance?view=o365-...
