Hi, I'm not sure if this has been asked before, apologies in advance if this is a duplicate. I've searched everywhere and could not find a response, so this is my last stop.

My office, previously used Distribution lists a lot for various specific addresses needed, eg. <accoutnspayable@xwy.com > before microsoft teams came out.  Now we are in a place where we want the office to get into Teams, and using a centralized platform for communication and to help segregate emails and unclutter inboxes.  We want to be able to create , eg. finance@xwy.com (teams group), then create email address aliases eg. (wires @xwy.com , accounts@xwy.com) and link these to the previous address.

So that communication goes to 1 group inbox and the same members. Is this a featuee available in Teams / office groups ?

Responses are most appreciated.

If I understand you correctly you want to create aliases to a office 365 group?

If so it was possible by using powershell with the following command:

Set-UnifiedGroup -Identity "Office 365 Group" -EmailAddresses @{Add="smtp:aliasemailaddress"

I've heard this may not be possible anymore, but try it out and let me know!

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I'll let my managers know.

We want to move away from creating individual distribution lists and apply the previous distribution list addresses as an email alias to the main address (Team address : finance@xwy.com ).  I guess another method of email forwarding in a nutshell :?

Great! Keep in mind you can also convert an distribution list to a office 365 group...

Let me know how it works out!

Hi @Jerez Rolle

If you select the option to email people in a team, you'd choose the channel you'd like the email to go to and it shows up like any other post.  If you click the drop down next to the channel it will allow you to select the email address to that channel.

This comes in handy when you want to make sure there's a single point people can view responses and have discussion - but keep in mind that comments and replies to the email in the channel will not send emails to anyone.  In this case, I would recommend emailing the channel but no one else.  If you choose to add people to that email, they may reply and then you'll have emails reply and a Teams conversation, both.

Sometimes it is useful to have a channel that is for emails, only - that way, you can keep all email conversations in one spot.  Other times, you'll want the email to be in the channel related to the specific topic.

This is a change in how users work so it'll take a bit of change management.  There are lots of best practices around increasing adoption - and I know there are a lot of different sessions related coming up at Ignite which are all streamed live this year!

In the meantime, here is a link to some guidance about emailing teams/channels that you might find useful.  I hope it helps: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/send-an-email-to-a-channel-in-teams-d91db004-d9d7-4a47-82e6...

Building on that. You can get email addresses for each channel. And then you can create a contact in exchange with the email address of a channel then add an alias to it to be able to send to that email to the channel.

But as said you can’t reply from teams if that is a requirement. However there is Mailclark a 3rd party app that will let you respond to emails in conversation and it’s actually affordably priced as well.

Thank you Laurie for the feedback, I will take it into consideration for what we may try.

Thanks Chris, I will look into this as well, and the Mailclark application and see if this can be a possible workaround as well.

Along the same lines, if you ever need to change an existing Team's email address, you can connect to Teams PowerShell and run the following cmdlet:

Set-UnifiedGroup -Identity GUID -EmailAddresses @{Remove="SMTP:oldemailaddress";Add="SMTP:newemailaddress"}

Is it possible to actually MAKE the Team General (default) Channel's Email Address the SAME email address as the O365 Group mailbox, which was created as the foundation to the team to begin with?  In other words, if I were to email the O365 Group Mailbox, it would also show up as a conversation in the General Tab within Teams for that Team.  Good Idea to begin with?  Bad Practice?  I'm looking for any feedback or recommendations.

I am looking for the exact same feature.

When I email Group, I want to automatically start a conversation in corresponding Team "General" channel.

Any way we can do this? Thank you!

Kind regards,

Rui

Yes, this is kind if possible! Copy the channel address and add that address as a member of the Office 365 group! Make sure that users subscribe

When you Mail to the Office 365 group the Mail Will End up in the channel and with attachments as usual!
Make sure other members unsubscribe if they don’t want mails to them too

Adam

Excellent idea! Thanks :)

That's fantastic! I'll play with it and see how the user experience is. Thank you!

Hey Adam,

do you also have a solution if you want to have different channels for inbox and outbox? I tried to do that with the "flow" extension and it works with forwarding messages from the inbox (filtering the domain and decide wether it's inbox or outbox). But this doesn't look very nice in the teams conversation.

With your "group" solution it should work quite well already but then everything is in one channel which can get very confusing.

Thx in advance!

Can you explain a little more in detail what you are trying to do?

I guess if you set a CC or forwarding to another channel mail on outgoing from the group mailbox??

So, basically we have a project e-mail address. This e-mail should be used for our clients as additional address and gets set in CC.  Everytime an e-mail is incoming on this project this e-mail should be in the "inbox" channel from MS teams. If we want to contact the client for this project we also set this e-mail address in CC. This e-mail then should go into the "outbox" channel from MS teams.

I tested it with Flow and forwarded e-mails on this project mail to the channel addresses of MS teams. But then this doesn't look right to me.. there is always this "forward to.." messaging stuff in the e-mail header and I this will get messy very quickly.

What if you use 2 different emails for this?
One for channel inbox and one for channel outbox

Then also the client gets accidentally 2 e-mail addresses and gets even more confused (probably).

Hi Ben,  can you tell me if this PowerShell script is still current?  We would like the capability of changing the auto email address that is created by Teams.  Thank you for your help!  Margie

You cannot change channel e-mail addresses if this is what you are referring.

@Chris Webb

Thanks for your email.... we did want to limit the number of email accounts associated with a team.  This aspect can get out of control rapidly.  Any suggestions?

Only thing you can limit is on or off. You can control who can e-mail your channels, but thsoe e-mail don't show anywhere and are random so don't really see what the negative is for having them or why you would want to limit them?
You can change the PrimarySMTPAddress of a Team yes. Set-UnifiedGroup [GroupName] -PrimarySMTPAddress The old one goes into proxyAddresses
Get an email address for the General Channel, and make that a forwarder on the advertised email address you use. If you use the Default Address taht comes with the Team, those mails go into the Group Inbox that you can only see in the Outlook client. But you have to unhide the O365 Unified Group from Exchange Clinets before you can see it, and then you would have to toggle back and forth.

I wrote a blog about this: https://www.neroblanco.co.uk/2019/11/where-do-emails-sent-to-the-the-default-microsoft-teams-email-a...
You can set SendAs on the UnifiedGroup, but that would be for the default email address and would need to be used from within Outlook. But then you would need to check the Group Inbox.

@Shad StarkYes, create the General Channel email address, then set a forwarder directly on the mailbox.  Using the -GroupMailbox switch is the key.

Set-Mailbox -Identity "Contoso" -GroupMailbox -ForwardingSmtpAddress "34694ce3.yourdomain.co.uk@emea.teams.ms"

yes, but you need to be granted SendAs on the Team (UnifiedGroup) Then create the General Channel email address, then set a forwarder directly on the mailbox.  Using the -GroupMailbox switch is the key.  Send items would not appear so you would need to BCC itself

Set-Mailbox -Identity "Contoso" -GroupMailbox -ForwardingSmtpAddress "34694ce3.yourdomain.co.uk@emea.teams.ms"
