In the last few weeks we've lost the ability to edit newly posted messages in Teams.  Previously there was a 24-hour window where a post in a channel or a chat could be edited by hovering over the post in the right corner near the 'save' ribbon and clicking the pencil.  The edit pencil has disappeared. 

 

Here's an example I've just posted, and I've outlined where the edit pencil icon would normally appear:Edit icon missing.jpg

  

I've checked the team settings and there's no place I can find the disable/enable message editing, and I'm not aware of any settings elsewhere.

 

Anyone else seen this, or have a solution?

Were these settings changed on that Team? Does this occur on all Teams? Are you an owner of the Team?

@Christopher Scott (O365) where are those settings? Are they specific to every team?

If you click the ... by the Team Name and choose View Team, click the Settings option, you can find them there. They are Team specific, but should be on by default.

I've talked to another Team and they, too, do not have the edit option.

Are there administrative options elsewhere that might set this?

My apologies. My build is internal and has these additional options. 

 

However, there are tenant level settings (this is from a first-release tenant, so YMMV). Found in the Admin Center, Settings, Services & add-ins, Microsoft Teams.

I apologize for the delay.  I spoke with our Teams admin and he says we're good on the tenant level, yet we still don't have the ability to edit messages.

The problem persists across all Teams.  We created a new one today and it, too, lacks the ability to edit messages.

Sounds like you need to open a support case to review this. There shouldn't be any reason, based on your settings, that prevents users from editing posts within the initial 24 hours of posting a message.

If you do go down this road, please post back what the cause/resolution was.
That's our next step -- I'll post what we learn. Thanks for the help thus far.

I apologize for the delay replying.

 

We opened a ticket with Microsoft and they weren't able to find a cause.  And then one day the ability to edit/delete newly posted messages/chats returned.  Following up with MS they said they hadn't changed or adjusted anything, so there weren't sure what the fix was.  All users were impacted by this problem, and now all users have the ability to edit/delete.  But there's a new rub:  you can edit/delete ALL of your own channel/chat messages regardless of the message's age.  I've gone back 3 months and can edit/delete those message.  

 

We're on a hybrid arrangement:  on-prem Outlook with Teams.  I noticed about the time the edit/delete feature was 'fixed' that email addresses for channels became available.  With Oulook on-prem we haven't been able to email channels -- the option didn't exist.  I understand we're looking at o365 email in lieu of on-prem for some future date, so maybe during testing or initial set-up something was changed or adjusted that impacted the edit/delete feature.  This goes well beyond my level of Microsoft expertise and knowledge, but maybe this will be useful or interesting to someone else.

 

 

We *had* the ability to edit, and this week lost it. Was it part of last week's update by chance?

I've also recently lost the ability to edit a post recently AND for some reason my URLs are not turning into clickable links.

I finally stumbled upon the location of this setting!  :)

First, you'll want to click the "..." next to the team name and select "Manage team"

This will take you to the list of members. There are other options along the top. Select the "Settings" option. Expand "Member permissions" and you'll see the options that you need to set. Check the boxes for "Everyone can delete their messages" and "Everyone can edit their messages"...

App settings were verified by our OPS team. 

The issue seems to be an intermittent / inconsistent problem with members.

Clicking on the "..." button will either open the menu or not at all.

It will occur one day and then be fine the next.

It will occur with one member, yet be fine with another.

Sometimes clicking multiple times will open it, yet it will close right away.

 

We’re having this issue. Unfortunately the functionality dropped out literally 2 hours before I had to do onboarding/training for a team. How long does it generally take until the functionality reappears?

What exactly is the issue? What is missing, not working? Just edit?

Make sure that admin has not set a policy that prohibits editing messages and that the team owner(s) hasn’t done this change in the team settings

I miss the "edit" menu option in Microsoft Teams conversation posts (see attached screen shot. Edit = Bearbeiten in German). I have checked all the settings in the Teams space itself and in the Teams admin center, including policies. There is no setting or policy activated that restricts the editing of own conversations posts. When I am a guest in a Teams on another tenant, I can edit my own posts, but not when I am in a Teams on our own tenant. Other Teams users on our tenant can edit their own posts. It is just me that is experiencing this problem.

Check to see if there’s a different policy assigned to you! In TAC - go to users - you - policies - and check if you have any other policies assigned than the rest!

 Hi @adam deltinger . I have checked this. There used to be a specific policy for me that excluded editing (I did some policiy testing) - but I have changed back my settings to the default company settings for some time now. But the menu option for editing my posts has not shown up despite the policy change. With the default company settings every user in our tentant can edit her/his posts. It is just me (who used to have a different policy) that cannot edit my posts. From my point of view it looks as if the policy change failed somehow.

I’d suggest either remove/ add the policy and give it some time, or set it by powershell
