You can control whether these are visible in the GAL through PowerShell: https://technet.microsoft.com/library/mt238274(v=exchg.160).aspx

Specifically, this parameter:

HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled
Optional
System.Boolean
The HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled parameter specifies whether this recipient is visible in address lists. Valid values are:
  • $true   The recipient isn't visible in address lists.
  • $false   The recipient is visible in address lists. This is the default value.

This is true the issue is if i am not aware that they are created i cannot block them .

Ah, got it. If this is a major concern for you that must be fixed, I would revoke the ability for your users to create Groups and build a creation process for them to follow where they make a request and then you either manually create them (not ideal) or build scripts to automate their creation (better) that includes the PowerShell to remove them from the GAL.

i'm glad that i'm not the only one who is seeing this as a potential issue :)

aaron, i have raised this topic also in several comments of the following thread (although the topic of the thread as a bit different)

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Teams/Using-Teams-without-Exchange-initially-what-d...

restricting the users (so that they can't create O365Groups) is not an option because this would mean that they would not be able to create any MS teams. So this would be contra-productive to all the collaboration efforts :)

I guess only Microsoft could give an answer to this topic how an organization can steer and control this

I would argue that a bit.

Don't think of it as restricting users from creating groups, but more of creating a process they must follow that will have an approval step in the middle. This can range from ultra simple and manual via email if you're a small org and the volume is no big deal, all the way up to potentially some sort of fully automated solution in various forms if you have the means and demand to bake it out all the way.

The automation probably won't be able to actually create the Team for them at this point, but I expect this API functionality to come in the future allowing these types of scenarios. What could probably happen now is some sort of notification back to the requesting user letting them know they've been approved and that their Office 365 Group is created and ready. Then you simply instruct them to go into Teams, hit 'Add team', Click 'Create a team' and then choose the 'Add Microsoft Teams to an existing Office 365 group?" functionality at the bottom of that screen to get their Team created.

I'm making a few assumptions in there that they can get deep enough into those screens to get to the 'Add Microsoft Teams' functionality, as I don't remember where the check occurs to see if they are enabled to create Groups. If the check is at the actual creation, that should work. If the check it out at the 'Add team' button, that makes things harder and you may have to go create the Team for them until APIs come available.

Thanks you

THe big issue is locating a list of Microsoft Team sites for my tenant

Hello Again

I have received the following information from Microsoft

A simple workaround as of now to find the newly created teams is by using Get-UnifiedGroup. By default when a new team is created its Office 365 Group will also be created. The difference is between the regular Office 365 Groups and Teams Groups is Welcome message. It is disabled in groups that are created from Teams. This logic will not work when a new Team is created using existing groups.

Get-UnifiedGroup |Where-Object {$_.WelcomeMessageEnabled -like "False"}|select Alias,ManagedByDetails

This is a great tip! @Ben Schorr does it make sense to get this tip documented somewhere as a short term workaround until better options and metrics exist around Teams and which Office 365 Groups are Teams-enabled?

I don't think this is really a reliable workaround. A team can be created from an existing group. In that case, WelcomeMessageEnabled is not false. If all your teams are created by users who create groups first, then create a team from that group, you'll never see any of them.

Michael

This is true ...   Just what was provided by microsoft

Oops... it looks like you did include that information. I somehow didn't notice that in your last sentence, and was thinking of David's response about "which Office 365 Groups are Teams-enabled". I take it that currently, there's no way to determine this.

Thanks for posting this
