I'm looking to add Plans that were created from the Planner Hub (outside of the Teams application) into a Teams Channel.  My current workaround is to copy the link to the plan and link through the Website.

That is your only option, as Planner tab only grabs plans in the current Office 365 group. You can't currently create sub plans inside of planner and those plans being created int he Planner hub are actually new Office 365 groups and because of that the only option to add is the Website Tab as you have discovered, but also you have to remember that the group membership of the plans you link too need to include everyone in the Team your setting up the tab for as well or you will get permission issues.
