(Noob) Once you create a new Team Channel and then change the name (in my case, fixed a typo) then the related OneDrive folder for that channel did not get updated.

Are there other items needing to be changed manually whenever a Channel name is changed?

I'll also point out if you change the One Drive folder name to match the new Channel description then the Folder is no longer available in Teams.  Once I changed the One Driver folder back to the original mis-spelled title, then it was found again in Teams so it seems to be using the folder name, not an ID value.  (Error when folder spelling fixed:  "File Not Found. Scenario ID: C4B7585188E04456A6222E319FC4BFE1")

Definitely sounds like a flaw. The whole point of any object having an ID is that it's immutable, unlike a name. Implementing the underlying links using an ID is a no brainer.
Solution

AFAIK the folder name is determined at the moment of the channel creation, and the link between the two is static.

Hence the folder doesn't get automatically renamed and you cannot rename it manually without breaking the link, as you have already discovered.

If you absolutely want a renamed folder I'm afraid that you should delete the channel and recreate it with the right name.

Interesting case.

So the Channel name could be unequal the Foldername in the Team SPO Site  --over time.

For consistency reason this should be definitely fixed by MS because users will be trained that the channel name is equal the folder name

i've performed another testcase:

- upload an attachment via conversation  --> file is stored in the SPO channel folder

- rename on SPO level the folder --> MS Teams loses the relation to the folder (as you have indicated already)

interestingly:

- if you DOWNLOAD the attachment from the conversation thread then this works (right click on attachment)

- if you choose "Open Online" via the cOnversation (right click on attachment) you get an error

so it seems that some sort of relation still exists :)

I have the exact scenario and attempted to change the folder name in SPO which broke Teams. I ended up renaming it back to restore functionality. Hopefully you don't have to delete the channel and recreate but it seems that may be the only way.

It seems that until MSFT is able to fix the team to onedrive folder name link issue, the team name should not be editable (or at least prompt the user) before committing the change

Adding @Elaine Ansell for comments...

This is a bug that I knew from preview and I expected to see fixed at GA...but I can see that this is not the case
Agree, Salvatore...but I would expect that Teams application could manage this...technically It should be feasible

Yes, I think so too.

I guess we'll have to wait...

It is not just OneDrive, SharePoint names are slow to change, if ever. Try changing a Group name using OWA interface (... then Edit Group) and watch how long it takes to percolate through the various systems. My race order is:

  1. OWA main page
  2. OWA folder pane (more than just a browser refresh cycle)
  3. Outlook (but needs more kicking than a Send&Receive)
  4. Sharepoint
  5. if ever OneDrive for Business

Don't even get me going on the logo icon ...

Unfortunately, for the folder associated, this does not work as the former folder (use case is correcting a typo on the channel name) is re-created after a deletion of that folder. But I am sure everyone already knows this.

I know this is relatively speaking quite an old thread, but since this issue has not yet been resolved, it is still relevant.

I've just discovered a better workaround. Delete the folder linked to the channel and then Teams will recreate a folder, using the current Channel name.

So...

  1. Rename the folder to some other name
  2. Delete the folder still linked to the channel
  3. Open the Team channel files - Ms Team will recreate the folder using the current name
  4. Copy your files over from the previously renamed folder (Step 1)
  5. Delete that folder

I'm sorry - I was sure that I got that right, but now when I rename the channel, even having deleted the associated folder, it recreates it with the original name. However, I did experience it earlier, that having renamed a channel and deleting the folder, a new folder with the new name was created. I just don't remember the exact sequence of events that brought about this behavior.
Sorry!

I have this exact issue with the channel Files tab names and SharePoint document library folder names being out of sync, after we had to rename a few channels. This has become a major UX usability issue. Please provide a solution to fix this. Either let us to manually rename the directories in SharePoint and to same name as channel name in Teams or even better when a channel gets renamed in Teams, also rename the directory in SharePoint library.

I had a similar issue but found a way to fix it.

- Navigate to your SharePoint site

- On the right side, click on the drop down that reads "All documents" and then click on "View in File Explorer"

- Go up to the parent directory of your team site (the level that has the name of the Team)

- Make sure the folder that holds your channel sub-folders is named "Shared Documents", if not, rename it. For some reason mine had been changed

- After I renamed it, the Files tab was working again on all of my channels

I hope this helps

This issue is driving me crazy, even deleting the channel didn't help -it won't let me recreate it because the name is already in use, despite it being totally deleted.

Why is this so **bleep** difficult, it's so frustrating!

Yes, I would like to know how to resolve this as I am dealing with this currently.

We have just had the same issue in that Shared Documents was renamed and the fix worked for us. The cause was traced to the site owner, who set up a quick access shortcut in Win10 and then renamed it !

Just a reminder that you only see the Open in Windows Explorer option if you are using IE 11.

Unfortunately deleting a channel means loosing all the Planner tasks you might have on it as well!
Tested on my own nightmare..

so it's a NO-GO!

This is a serious shame cmon
