Good morning. I've recently set up my staff with Teams as we operate out of multiple locations and it has been great for communication, save for the insanely ludicrous memory hog it poses on our computers, but I digress, that is not my concern today. 

Two out of fifteen of my staff members do not have any contacts... in a manner of speaking. Once the app was installed, and after said staff signed in on the first launch, there were no contacts to be found under the chat panel. However, I cannot find a solution to this combing the community and support pages. I find constant topics regarding not being able to add external contacts, but every single one of us registered with a full Office 365 exchange suite, @dennyandrewsford.com & @daperformance.ca , and every single other staff member, including myself, has had their contacts auto-populate.

Now, it's not without functionality.. My two staff in question can indeed send messages still, but through a few extra, complicated steps. They have to search for the contact in question, which will yield no results, but in the left pane, they can select "people", and the specific contact they're looking for will show up, and allow them to send a message. However, there are still group chats we have that they cannot access through this method, and as much as I hate to say it, my staff is not very capable with tech and this method simply will not work for them.

I've attached some images to help clarify my scenario.If there is any information I can provide to resolve this, just let me know. We really want to use this app as it has provided us a solution to many day-to-day problems we have.

PS: Due to the limitation of your site I cannot attach all my images for clarification. I was able to combine some of them, but I can send more images for clarification to someone's email if they are willing to work with me on this.

To send a message click the new chat button left of the search bar while standing on the chat tab!

Outlook contacts won’t transfer over to teams but if some users where using Skype for business previously or currently these will! That could explain why some users didn’t get any contacts! They can however right click chats and add to contact list!
You should edit those email addresses. You are opening yourself up to bot's that scrub message boards like this...

I don't think you understand my concern, and I get the feeling you didn't view my images either. Message functionality is still there, but my staff need to take a complicated process to message someone and that just won't do for an IM... it actually defeats the purpose of an IM program. If that is the standard Microsoft Teams presents, then I have to apologize but this is a shoddy product I wouldn't recommend to any other business.

Every single one of my staff members have only used the Excel, Word, and Outlook programs through their suite. I have installed my suite on my home computer... but nobody uses Skype, including myself, nor do we even have it installed on the computers here (we run windows 7, so unlike windows 10 it is not automatically installed).

Like I mentioned, I combed through the community and I have seen consistent posts stating your similar answer, but unfortunately I would have to disagree; 13 of the staff members including myself, had our teams contacts auto-populate. I know this because I set every single person up myself, and I did not manually add any of my contacts, including those not in my outlook contact list. If it is what it is, then I suppose I will take spare time out of my day to manually add each contact for just the two personnel.

They are doing a search instead of starting a chat directly! First time they need to start typing who they like to chat with ( 3 first letters is enough to bring up suggestions from catalog ) then they can easily add it to their contact group, or pin it for easy access!
Apart from the no contacts populated automatically , I Can’t really see the cumbersome process here! If you are a large org, you dont want everyone among your contacts but rather the ones you IM with, then search for new one if needed and add to that list!

Hey Adam, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my concerns, thank you my man! Again, the concern is that everyone else's populated and I have two that for some reason did not. The staff I work with as well are not tech savvy and it's an uphill struggle to implement any sort of new measures (synced online spreadsheets vs a pen+paper logbook for instance).

And I have to apologize, as I know that you might think so, and relatively speaking, it is not a cumbersome process, but this defeats the purpose of an IM program. I would send an email through outlook faster if this is the case. Despite all this, I know that you're going to be right about the contacts... guaranteed there is something about the email accounts that probably had some underlying information that transferred over, I'm just not sure what, and there isn't any particularly clear reason why.

@JBFudge the list of contacts in the call tab comes from your Outlook contacts, do all your users have a list of contacts in Outlook? It's not 'auto-populated', it's the same view you get in Outlook. Does everyone have a dial-plan?

 

As @adam deltinger explained this isn't really the way most of us use to start a conversation with another member of staff in our organisation, we just start a new conversation from the button beside the search box, then enter their names just like when you address an email.
