You can't, Teams needs to keep fully up to date to work with the service.
Agree with Steven and I cannot think on a reason why you should want this taking into account Teams became GA last week....It might happen in the future Microsoft will provide controls to manage how teams apps are updated

Actually, I also would be interested in a way to disable Microsoft Teams auto-update on our macs.

Basically, our users have standard level accounts which do not have privileges to install softwares (updates are pushed every week through the use of apple remote desktop). However, the users are continually bugged by a window requesting them to login as admin to allow the update of microsoft teams, which they cannot do (the window appear multiple times per day...)

Me as well.   Client is running teams for the last month on an RDS deployment (hoping to move to VDI) and the latest teams update has caused the 40 user office to slow to a crawl as each user's teams session now updates individually.

If Teams needs to stay "fully up to date to work with the service", and additional people see no problem with this, then I submit that there's a huge disconnect with the idea of CSAT and usability here (and this would only be one of the reasons).

It would be great to have a toggle for this - on Mac, the Teams client restarts itself to update and steals focus. Very irritating - just give me a notification in-app when an update is available so I can install it when I want to.

Has anyone found a solution for this yet? I know the settings.json file used by teams stores most of the background settings; including "enableBlockSilentUpdate." If I make a change to this file Teams will update my changes at app launch. Does anyone know how to prevent this?

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams\settings.json

Till now I have not seen an option for that. If you really want this i suggest you create a Uservoice.

But be Aware Teams is like any app you have on your phone it updates after each sprint in a cycle of 1-4 weeks.

As I'm sure most people have noticed, the Teams product moves really fast, adding new features and capabilities every couple of weeks. In order to achieve this speed the opportunity for testing the service with different older versions of the client s reduced, which is why it's necessary to allow the clients to update automatically. There is no supported way to prevent updates. If this causes issues, for example on VDI, restricted devices you might want to consider using the browser version of Teams in Chrome or Edge. In my organisation my non-admin users can install and update Teams as we trusted it's certificate through our AppLocker policy. If someone would like to suggest a Long Term Branch for Teams through Uservoice I'm sure the product group would be intersted to see how much demand there would be for such a feature.

In our company we were able to block updates by disabling everyone access to:

"%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\DownloadedUpdate"

After update i am facing issue with team getting error oh we cant connect you Thats why i dont want to update it please help if possible@Steven Collier

@brijrautela I doubt that is related to a problem in the client after the update. Can you connect to teams.microsoft.com in your web browser and sign in? Do you have any coworkers with the same problem? You could also try to connect from another network.

Hi Linus,

Thanks for your reply, i am able to login in web browser, we are 4 or 5 folks are facing this issue in my company, i tried to uninstalled re-installed Latest version but no go kindly suggest

At the time of my original post I had a problem with the constant updates because the update would change my custom settings.  For example, the Zoom function would not work because it was disabled on the "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams\settings.json" file.  Once I manually enabled the Zoom setting I was able to zoom using "CTRL +" or "CTRL Scroll Wheel".  The Zoom function was eventually addressed by those updates I desperately tried to disabled.

@Chanuka Perera

If you're trying to stop updates you can try changing the following settings on the json file;

 "desktopUpdateHostName": "teams.microsoft.com",
"enableBlockSilentUpdate": false,
"disableAllUsersAutoUpdate": false,

There are other Update settings on the settings.json file you could try but those stood out the most.  One last thing, don't use the shortcut created by Teams installer as it points to an update executable.

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\Update.exe --processStart "Teams.exe"

When blocking access to folder how will that affect clients in the long run? Teams will connect to

https://teams.microsoft.com/desktopclient/update/<currentteamsversion>/windows/x64?ring=general and then it will try do download the file but it can't due to file access rights, after a while your Teams client might be that old that it can't sign into Teams (even if I have not seen that yet even when trying with 6 months old clients).

During the ignite session BRK3138 they mentioned "Staged rollout" and the possiblity to use pilot groups that will be able to get the latest release and test out all functions used within the organisation, not sure how or when this is coming.
