I was having a similiar discussion in another thread and decided to start a new conversation here.

I having trouble to find a Teams-only way to communicate with another private team that I'm not a member of. Basically, I'm part of the private "IT Team" group, and would like to shoot a message (or whatever) to the private "Sales Team" group, which I'm not a member of.  How would I do this without leaving teams and not manually starting a private chat and invite every single member of the sales team?

If I were to use Outlook, I could just add the Sales Team to the To: field and send them a message and possibly start a conversation with them.

What is the Teams equivalent for this scenario?

I would have expected to just be able to start private chat and add the teams name in the recipient field within teams, but that doesn't work. Having it given some more technical thought, I understand the challenge. How and where would this private chat be presented to the team? One thing I could imagine, is that this private chat on my end, could be a teams conversation thread in the General Channel of that team.

Any thoughts?

I cannot think on a way to have this Today in Teams and to me it makes sense your scenario. I could think that when private channels arrive, we might have a different point of view here

This is where Shared channels come in. Dan Stevenson was talking about them looking at doing shared channels along with private channels, but the idea is you could have an IT channel in the Sales Team, that you could post a message to that would show up and you both could communicate.

Hoping this comes sooner than later because right now the only way around this is to have a larger org Team, with all the departmental teams having their own channel and everyone in that Team (Restrict general channel to prevent chaos!), so IT Team, Sales Team etc. etc. that you could favorite / follow your channel, then you can @mention those channels from another channel in that Team, or go directly to their channel to ask a question and if everyone follows/favorites those channels they will get an activity / alert etc. and be able to respond.

This is what I'm doing now with a dynamic all employees group. It's just not the same as sending them a private message.

Interesting idea about those Shared Channels. Right now we'll resort to mailing them for now, it's already hard enough for people to let go of email :p doing it all at once wouldn't work anyway ;)

My company is expecting to rollout Teams, and I've been struggling with this issue of how to allow Teams to communicate together... for example, how can a member of Team A ask a question to the staff who are part of Team B?  Having shared Channels makes perfect sense - is there any hope of getting this feature soon?

The only way I could think of structuring this is the way Christopher responded, to have a large team, and individual teams just get their own channel.  How much functionality does a team give up by having to use a Channel instead of having their own Team?

they wouldn't be able to have private conversations and can't @mention them.

@Ivan UngerI would like to do the same thing. I see your post is from 04-2018, do you know of any updates?

Hi @MKB_Au , there are no changes to Teams' behavior on this matter. You still cannot contact a different Team.
