How can I send a message to everyone in a channel but not to the whole team?

We've just started using MS Teams as a replacement for Slack. We have a single Team set up for our department and underneath that team we have created a number of Channels. Each Channel is for a different project that various people are working on.

We've noticed that when we send a message to @channel it sends it to everyone in the Team. Is there a way of setting things up so that people can subscribe to only the channels that are relevant to them and get notified only for those channels? Or do we have to set all of our projects up as Teams under the main Team?

As you can see , we're a bit confused as to how this works and are finding it counter-intuitive for a site like ours where we are used to the simplicity of Slack where @channel only sends a message to the people in that channel. And judging by https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/20305825-use-slack-style-chann... we're not the only ones!

@Phill Edwards you can accomplish this by using the @channel mentions like you did, but the reason everyone got the notification cause you most likely used one of the first 4 channels that were created with the Team for testing. Basically the first 4 channels everyone in the Team has Favorited by default and basically if you have a channel favorited you get a notification for that mention. So in the Teams world when you favorite a channel it is similar to join a channel in Slack.

I think it's a little confusing terminology but that's how it works, tell people that if you favorite a channel you basically get the following:

a. the channel is in your list of channels for quick access.

b. new messages to channels you favorite will cause the channel and the team containing that channel to bold when there is unread messages in that channel (similar to outlook).

c. @channel mentions will mention you (assuming you didn't tamper with the notification setting for channel mention)

Following a channel is just a notify me of everything option. But you can only follow a channel you favorite, so it's just an extra layer of make sure I don't miss any messages, or replies regardless of mentions.

Hopefully this helps clear things up. Let me know if you have any further questions around notifications, I deal with this constantly trying to explain it to my users :).

Hi Christopher, thanks for the explanation. I'll pass this onto our users. I have also been wondering what "Follow this channel" does. How is it different from favouriting a channel?
I said that in my reply :). Anyway, basically Follow is a subscribe to every single message in the channel regardless if you get mentioned. So every new message and reply, give you a banner notification/activity feed entry (Assuming you have it turned on in notification settings) which by default is.

Hi

If I use the @channel I see the message in the conversation but nobody receives the e-mail. Also I have tried to send from Outlook an e-mail to the conversation's e-mail (something like ....@emea.teams.ms) and the result is that the full e-mail is shown in the conversation but again, nobody in the team or i the conversation has received an e-mail. So:

  • Is it possible to send e-mail from the channel => users?
  • Is it a configuration issue (something that must be enabled, extra paid, ...)?

Thanks!

@ilegido_scytl If a user was mentioned in a channel, either by name or through @channel and hasn' read it in teams for an hour they get sent an email telling them what they are missing. In general though Teams isn't some kind of email list service, it's a chat service, emails are only used to notify occasional users they missed something mentioning them.
