Hi All

Hope everyone is well. I needed some advice. When creating a new Team, do you recommend creating the Team first, which from the looks of things creates an Office 365 Group behind the scenes, or manually create the group and then the Team?

Reason I ask is because I created a Team and added my regular domain account as the owner. I also added some members to test. I, with my regular domain account, can see the Team in the Teams app but I do not see the group in my list of groups in Outlook. The other staff can see the Team in the Teams app and can also see the group in Outlook. Even if I check via OWA I cannot see the group.

It depends! By default a group created when you create it from Teams, will be hidden from outlook! If you want to have the groups in Outlook as well you could create them from Outlook and add a team to them!
You could also create them from Teams and use powershell to make them visible in Outlook! You have to do this for every group created from Teams each time!

Set-unifiedgroup (name of group) -hiddenfromexchangeclientsenabled: $False

Hi Adam, Thank you for prompt reply. Much appreciated. I wasn't referring to seeing the group in the GAL. I mean't I cannot see the group in the groups view in Outlook. I managed to figure something out thou. When I created the team in the Teams admin portal I added my regular domain account as a team owner but not a team member. I was under the impression that making someone a team owner will automatically add them to the team, which it did, and then it will automatically add them to the Office 365 group, which it did.....partially. After adding my account as a member to the team the underlying 365 group appeared almost instantly in Outlook.

Wow, learnt something new here!! Two thing actually!!

When you create a team from the admin portal - the owner isn’t added as a member of the group! This is the default behavior when you create a team from teams! This is probably because the admin creates a team on behalf of someone else!

What I’m confused about is that this group is indeed added to the groups section in Outlook! I was indeed talking about this before!! If you create a group from outlook this is hidden by default! Now it’s not! @Chris Hoard @Chris Webb , Juan , is this expected??
Groups have never hidden by default it’s only if you create a new team. Using existing group won’t hide it.
Let me rephrase. Creating from within Teams hides from address list and clients(outlook). Otherwise it will appear in both created anywhere else.
Okay! I thought creating a team first would always set these attributes to true! Even from TAC
Can’t really see why this experience should be different? You do create a team from scratch both ways and should be the same experience! Is this meant to be or just a thing MS forgot about?
Probably a bug they overlooked. Not sure what the Admin Center uses when it creates them.
Yeah, a bug makes sense here
YeH, a bug makes sense here

@adam deltinger @Chris Webb

Thank you gents for all the help.

One last question.....if you got an Office 365 group.....how do you create a team based on that? Or add the Teams functionality to that group?

Easiest is from teams itself! Create new team, choose “create from existing Office 365 group” choose the group
