We have a Teams site with many uploaded xls files created outside of Teams (and ppt and doc too). I can't see any good reason why they weren't created as xlsx.

A lot of functionality such as Data Validation dropdowns don't play nicely with xls when editing in Excel Online/Teams.

Is there a simple workflow to convert an xls in Teams to xlsx? Obviously we can download, open and save as, re-upload and archive the original. But I'd like a quicker and simpler flow if one exists.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

There are some 3rd party tools and the old 2010 tool might do it, but you would have to download all the files locally convert, then reupload them to the library, now way to inplace convert them in their existing locations.

Thank you @Chris Webb unfortunately third party tools are blocked.

I have however found that the Convert button in the Compatibility Mode section under the File menu defaults to saving the xlsx in the same SharePoint location as the original. so that's made things a little simpler.

Ya, that's a nifty tool. I was thinking bulk conversion when responding :). But yeah one by one that's the way to go!
