Since there's no plugin available, post a roadmap or something regarding video and desktop sharing support in the Chrome Browser.  Ignite said "Soon".  The silence is deafening.

Yes, it's all over the place, but at Ignite in the Meetings session they said it was "coming soon" while they tried to demo Teams meetings in Chrome.

 

When something is on the backlog, it's not being worked on.  So, there's an obvious issue with the communication on this feature.

A lot of people have felt about this about the amount of time to release a number of things including Private Channels, searching for Teams, Shifts, a slick guest process. It will be some time yet before its considered a mature application.

When WebEx, Zoom, BlueJeans are headed to pluginless meeting experiences, Teams is behind the curve and not a viable competitor until they get this feature out the door.

 

They also recently tried to remove the Skype for Business meetings app plugin on the Mac, and force all guests to download and install the full client.  I really don't get their thinking, quite frankly.  In a previous AMA, one of the MSFT employees asked "Why can't they use the desktop client?"   Makes sense for real collaboration teams, but not for a replacement of Skype for Business external meetings that contain one-off guests.

I agree, I have seen posts on here where they are kind of pushing towards a full fat client experience and ask it rhetorically to members. I just think the community needs to push where they can and be as loud as they can for the features. I think its going to be at least another 12 months of gritting teeth on some of these gaps.

I'll make a note and let you know if I get a response on it. Hope I kind of answered your question. I am certainly in agreement with you and I'll advocate for it until the features are there.

That is nice, thanks for sharing. It doesn't really give us pluginless video in Chrome though, which is what we need. E.g. the ability to attend an online meeting using video directly in Chrome.

have you got any news about supporting calls in Google Chrome? In our company we would like to implement MS Teams but it is blocker for us. We collaborate a lot with external people who does not have Teams. Join the meeting via browser can be acceptable for them when it will be possible share desktop and video there. Share files you can do it different way. It will be really useful when these two features are available. I tried the extension for Chrome but it does not work.

 

Also I tried to make call from chat in Teams and it showed me the message "This feature isn't available yet for your browser. Try the web app with Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, or switch to the desktop app." but I use Chrome... what is wrong? I can make a call in group chat but in 1:1 chat... it is absolutely confusing.

I'm with you on this. We were pushing for full adoption and have come to the conclusion that for now, Teams is a tool to use across our tenant but not with our clients. It's frustrating because SFB is more capable but not particularly user-friendly, although we are currently recommending it's use for external calls. I want to stick with the MS stack but we're often under pressure from our staff to use different tech such as Zoom or BlueJeans. Would be great to move on from 'coming soon'!

Looking at the fact that all the relevant switches are in dev on Chrome the sense seems to be that MS are need Chrome to implement bits that Teams needs rather that the other way round.

 

Even more so given Edge is soon to become Chromiumish.

This is available today via a CVI partner, WebRTC into a Teams meeting will full audio, video and content in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Brave etc.

Paying $1500 per concurrent user and not telling users to click the native Join a Team Meeting is not really a solution.

Since the workaround to fake the User Agent as "Edge Windows" works very well you just might could remove the code lines preventing to use Chrome on Linux....

It is 2019 video calls are no witchcraft and you want to offer a collab tool for developers...

"Why can't they use the desktop client?" "Because you do not offer a Desktop Client for non-Windows Users as well..."

Microsoft: your response of "why can't you just use the desktop client" shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the space you are trying to conquer, and is a gift to all your competitors out there. I do like where you are heading with Teams, and would like to embrace both internally in my company and recommend to all our clients, but as long as you are unable to deliver a friction-free all-browser user experience I cannot do that. I find it both surprising and frustrating that this is even a topic in 2019.

@c-ego Changing the user agent allowed video to work for me (which only shows they could enable it if they like), but I couldn't get screen sharing to work.

@Christopher Hoard Reading it very carefully (as I always do w/ my MS skepticism), I noticed a couple of details in their announcement.

  1. They said it is for "Windows and Mac" users.  That indicate it won't work on Chrome OS / Linux.  Probably not an issue for a lot of environments.  But it is for us (we're EDU and have both Chrome OS and Linux).  They recently changed the consumer Skype for Web to only support Windows and Mac OS in Chrome, excluding Chrome OS and Linux.  Funny part is that it works fine, but you have to change your user agent - so again that seems intentional.

  2. It says that Chrome users will be able to "see" video, but says nothing of sharing their video.  So that indicates that the video portion will be one-way.

The way that desktop sharing reads, it seems as if it will be two-way - so that's a plus.

@Dwayne Alton I posted a clarifying question on the video portion.  The final statement in that paragraph indicates this feature will allow "face-to-face" collaboration, so perhaps it's just a misstatement.

@Phillip Lyle As of today, I was able to connect to a Teams meeting via Chrome on Windows and Mac and the video worked with no issues and no installation of anything. :)

@AnglicanFamilyCare Good catch!  Seems like they did enable something, but my initial experience was wonky.

 

I am seeing the self-view camera displayed across the 50% top of the screen upon initial join via Chrome (and half of it is cut off).  When I joined from my Teams app on my mobile phone, it likewise displayed the phone image cropped about 50% and stretched horizontal across the screen.

 

No screen sharing either, sadly.  Even the chrome sharing plugin doesn't work in this scenario.

I've confirmed that the limited Chrome support that appears to be working at the moment is awful.

 

Unlike the Edge browser, Chrome will truncate your camera and the video of those you are watching into an ultra-wide view.  Tested from multiple computers and scenarios.   I would have rather they left it off.

@Phillip Lyle Oh, sorry to hear that! I only did a quick test and all appeared to be working fine, I didn't notice the issues you mentioned. Hopefully it improves soon!

Worked well in 1:1 testing. 

The only limitation is the lack of screen sharing capability for Guests.

Feel it's almost there but not quite ready to can SFB as our tool of choice for meetings with externals.
