Alright. So I am definitely new to this whole guest access and 365 account access thing here in Teams and I can't seem to find any documentation that outlines what I am experiencing. So I have a vendor that uses Microsoft Teams and they added me to one of their teams, but I was added as a guest. However, when I went to load Teams in my browser it logs me in and shows me as a Guest user.

However, when I tried to access the same link using my Teams client installed on my computer, it asked me to "Switch Org" and I really have no clue why.

So I am wondering, does anyone have any suggestions as to why it would require me to "Switch Org" when I have a 365 Enterprise account and have all the appropriate permissions, but I can't join this external vendors Microsoft Teams team without switching to my "Guest" or other org account?

Thanks.

Yes, this is how it works! Basically when you become a guest in another office 365 environment, your guest account gets created in their tenant! So you need to switch over to their tenant in Teams in order to work there!

So you only see your each tenants teams where you are guest at a time!

I agree this is rather clumsy and hopefully Microsoft will improve the experience!

I recommend using a profiles in chrome for fast access to your external teams

Adam is right. This is how it works. You go straight in with browser cause it’s a link and you are just basically getting switched into the tenant by link. The desktop client is already in your home tenant so clicking link to open on client has to switch to their tenant. You will always be a guest when accessing other tenant teams.
Sorry for being frank, but this absolutely sucks. lol

I guess I am kind of surprised as we both have Office 365 accounts and the proper level of 365 accounts that I am surprised I am unable to just simply be able to chat/view with this user.

I also find this interesting because I had a ticket open with Microsoft and they were chatting with me from their side through Teams and to me through Teams. So to me it says that the Chatting and Teams capabilities is able to work as in I don't have to sign out of my desktop client and that 365 account in order to switch to my Guest access 365 account.

So while I definitely am not saying either your guys answers are wrong (cause you both really do sound like you know what you are talking about and are very helpful), I just find it hard to believe that this type of functionality isn't available. If this is truly the way it is, then that is really unfortunate. Makes the fact of how Teams is supposed to be a Collaboration tool and your one-stop shop for everything you need not be 100% true and that it is your one-stop shop for everything you need internally, but to do things externally you need to access the client another way.

My last question then is, do either of you know if this configuration is being addressed at all? The only potential UserVoice that I have found that could encompass this is below. However, I would be interested to know your feedback on this as well.

Thanks again for all the hope.

Yeah! Unfortunately this is how it works! 100 % :)

As said before, using a browser let you access the tenant without messing with your client! On mobile the switching works much better though! ( Which is good because the web client doesn't work on mobile)

What you are talking about is federation ( chat ) For this no switch is needed because you talk to someone from your tenant to someone in another tenant! Like skype!  But to access teams and also doing chat as the guest user, you need to switch!

Microsoft are well aware of the mishappiness about this! I don't have any status of it though..

Ok. Then I do have another question that falls under this exact same category and this whole entire guest access thing. So let's say that I have another vendor that uses Microsoft teams and they add me as a guest to their side as well. Does that mean that I now have a guest account that I need to manage for vendor B as well as a guest account that I need to manage for vendor B? Or does this mean that I just have a single unified guest account and that seemed account is the one that will be utilized as guest access to any future team or chat messages that I may receive?

I would be very curious to find out your feedback and knowledge on this one as depending on the answer you give could possibly make or break whether I continue wanting to try and Leverage Microsoft teams for any future external to my organization access and work.

Thanks again for all of your help and explanations. This has been truly helpful and insightful as well.
You only manage your own tenant account! The way it works is that each time you get invited to another org, a guest account gets created in their directory with your mail address! You don’t have to manage this!
What happens is that when you sign in to another tenant as guest , the authentication goes through your own tenant, aka if you change your password this will not affect anything when you switch or login to other orgs..
Also again you only need to be a guest somewhere if you need access to a team. You can cross org chat just by typing in someone’s email in new chat and hitting send. This does require external communication to be on which it is by default for the tenants involved.
Alright. Well, since I am a software support engineer, I could be getting invites from multiple different vendors. So I will just have to work with it and figure out a way to handle it. Hopefully when more vendors start utilizing Teams Microsoft will have fixed/updated this feature and you can truly access everything through one Teams client. :)
Hey Chris & Adam,

I wanted to update both of you on something I found really interesting today when I loaded my Teams client. I'm not sure if this happened because I did the switch org on my client or else I joined that other org from the web, but I am not able to dynamically switch the organizations I am connected to on my Teams client. I now have a drop down to the left of my profile picture to where I can change which one I am connected to. Granted it takes a little bit to switch, but I can now switch from my Teams client itself.

Again, not exactly sure how this happened or whether this is new functionality or what, but I don't HAVE to go to my web browser to work on my other projects. At least it is one step closer to having everything in one place. :)
