Howdy,

We have an Org-Wide team setup with a few channels  One of the channels is called Share Documents which is where we want everyone to put stuff that lots of people need access to instead of creating all kinds of teams with special permissions.  In the files section, we created two folders.  Employee Resources and Collaboration.  We want all files to have to go into one of those two folders (or sub-folders within them).

Is there some way we can set Read-Only permissions on the main Documents folder for the Shared Documents channel, and then have the two sub-folders be wide open for everyone to access?  We've had people put their files in the root Documents folder for the channel which we want to prevent.

I haven't been able to find a way to do this so far so I'm hoping I'm just overlooking how to do it.

Thanks!

@Mike Boehm If you access the SharePoint site you can assign permissions as you describe. In general it's best to not change things in that backend, but many people have done it before.

Solution

Yes you can, might be confusing for users but here we go:

Go to SharePoint from the files tab,
Navigate to the root of the library where you now see the corresponding channel folder ( for example the general folder)

Click the share button - up on the right in the share dialog box , click the three dots -> manage access!
Now set the permissions to read for members
Navigate to the folders inside this folder which should be read write! Do the same procedure and make sure members can edit!

Now users gets an error message when trying to create or add documents in the general files tab, but if the navigate to the other folder within, they have read/write access
