My understanding is that this is a new feature. If you create a Team, it creates the O365 group but does not put it in the GAL and thus cannot be accessed via Outlook.

Correct?

Is there a way to add it to Outlook and the GAL when someone creates a  group/team from Teams?

Solution

Hi,

per default the O365 Group where the Team is attached is set to be hidden from the GAL.

You can change this via powershell: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/exchange/users-and-groups/set-unifiedgroup?view=e...

If you set the property "HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled" of the group from $TRUE to $FALSE, the group will show up in the GAL and in the groups-section in Outlook for all members and owners.

Maybe in the future there will be a way to this in the GUI as well.

br

rock 'n roll! thank you! and I'll put that in UserVoice. it should a choice no matter where u create a group.

Hi all,

We actually enabled a new parameter called HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled that will control whether the group is hidden from the address book, Outlook left nav, and resolves when authoring a new mail message. If you decide you'd like a Team to show in Outlook, I recommend setting this to parameter to "false" for that group. You can find more info in our documentation here

Set-UnifiedGroup -Identity <GroupID> -HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled:$false

Mike

You guys both actually have this backwards :). The HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled as stated hides it from the groups section in the Outlook client, not the GAL. The GAL entry is controlled by the HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled :). Unless the HiddenFromExchangeclientsEnabled does both in one which I don't think it does ;P.

Updating HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled also updates HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled. Think of it as a more powerful umbrella setting.

Good to know, thanks for that clarification there. I knew they both were separate settings, that's why I was saying I didn't think they did, but now I know they do :).

@Eric Adler

I suggest this interactive script to make visible hidden teams in outlook.

#Connect to Exchange Online:
$UserCredential = Get-Credential
$Session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName Microsoft.Exchange -ConnectionUri https://outlook.office365.com/powershell-liveid/ -Credential $UserCredential -Authentication Basic -AllowRedirection
Import-PSSession $Session

#List hidden groups to select:
$TeamsGroups = Get-UnifiedGroup | ?{$_.HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled -eq $true} | Out-GridView -Title "Select hidden groups to make visible in Outlook" -PassThru

#Make selected groups visible in outlook
foreach ($TeamsGroup in $TeamsGroups){
set-UnifiedGroup -identity $TeamsGroup.identity -HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled:$false
}

#Disconnect
Exit-PSSession $Session
Exit

Kind regards
