I am delighted to announce that we have shipped the new OneNote tab app. This will allows users to both create new notebooks for a team and add existing notebooks. You may have to restart Teams to see the changes.

Users are able to select a specific notebook section for the tab app to always show first. We will shortly be adding the ability to do so via the 'Browse notebooks' option, but currently you can do this by pasting a link to the specific section via the 'Paste a OneNote link' option. We will also shortly be adding the ability to add a new section to an existing notebook.

 

The new tab app will show an entire notebook within the tab, rather than just one section. However old OneNote tabs will not be affected. To take advantage of the new tab, please remove old OneNote tabs and re-add them using the new experience.

Hi Brett, if you're asking what is this all about, then maybe this helps....MS has added new features to the OneNote functionality inside of MS Teams. So, instead of a OneNote notebook that starts with a simple unchangeable section, you get full featured functionality.

When I copy the section link from the OneNote Windows app and Paste as OneNote Link in the Teams Windows desktop app's new OneNote tab, the first page of the Notebook is shown and not the first page of the Section from the link. When I use the same link copied from the OneNote Windows app and paste into the browser, I get the first page of the Section. A screenshot of the link in the OneNote app that I used is below. Can you provide the steps needed to open the tab directly in a Section and not the Notebook? Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in reply. I think we have figured out what the issue is. Does the section that you are copying a link to have any spaces or special characters in the name? If so, the fix will shortly be released, and I'll let you know when that happens :)

Yes, this solved the problem with pasting a link from a section. Yes, our section name did have spaces as well as dashes.

 

This has created a workflow problem though. We depended on the default Notebook names and default Section names to build out the OneNote Notebook consistent on a per team basis. Now there is a lot of work to create the Notebook, create a new Section, and copy/paste links to the correct tabs. Are there plans to return the previous defaults as a selection on the new tab popup? Or at least let create create new Sections in the new tab popup?

Can we get/replace the existing notebook/sections that were created originally when the channel was created? I have existing full notebooks that I am bringing in to a teams channel stored on our sharefile. I would like to be able to remove the default OneNote tab that was created, I have 'moved' the orginal section to the full-blown notebook and would like to cleanup the Team tab 'OneNote' as it no longer works.... 

 

No option to move, did I miss something?

I am able to delete the Wiki tab from new channels that I create, but the OneNote tab for my old channels cannot be deleted.

The option to add an existing #OneNote notebook to a #MicrosoftTeams channel hasn't rolled out to Office 365 for Education yet. It will take a couple of months. I'll be sure to announce this when it becomes live.

it is becoming a mess now on our setup:

old channels got 1 notebook with sections per channel.

Now you get the option to create a notebook per channel , but I'm not able to get the same approach as before -> create 1 notebook ( for example in general channel) and in the next channel open this same notebook , but use a different section.

It will not show the "general tab" onenote in the "open existing onenote" menu...

 

anyone any idea why this is not working ?

WE created a one note file on one of our shared hard drives, with each section representing a project and directed One Note that this was where they were to be synced to . We did this because we were getting multiple copies of the One Note file being synced to multiple locations and it was getting very confusing as to which was the correct file to open. 

 

When we set up Teams, I added One Note section for each team/channel, linking it to the relevant section in teh One Note file.

 

I have just discovered that Teams has created anothe rcopy and it is now syncing to a new location, so we are back to square one with multiple copies of the same file, some of which are syncing and some of which are not.

 

Why does Teams interfere with where you have chosen to sync the file? It is ridiculous. The whole point of One Note was so that everything was synced, but now we have to find our which copy is syncing and whihc is not.....  

Have now discovered that it is not possible to share a one note notebook (unless it is only the online version). If you try to share a notebook with the entention that teh recipient is able to open the notebook on his/her desktop application that is not possible. WTF??????? THat is totally ridiculous MS. 
Apparently, the only way to do that is to export the notebook to a Notebook package and then share that package....How userfriendly and intuitive is that?

Coupled with the difficulty in ascertaining where books are syncing too and the consequent likelihood that you will end up with half a dozen notebooks with teh same name in various states of sync, this is another MS disaster....how does MS repeatedly screw products like this up? Does anyone there at MS think these things through, before releasing them to paying customers who then have to waste hours/days having to sort out problems that MS created in the first place?

My question is - is it the case that when you add an existing notebook to Teams, does it then change the syncing location? If so, if a team member opens up the desktop application, will he/she not then be confronted with multiple files with exactly the same name? How will he/she knwo which one is actually syncing and which is not (unless he/she looks at the file properties each time to identify where teh file is located)? Finally, does anyone at MS think any of this through?

We created a number of "OneNote" notebooks for different projects we are working on and located them via teh OneNOte app in (one of the two) OneDrives (as per apparent best practice). WE then tried to share them, but found out that this apparently only allows sharing of the online version and to allow afellow team member to see a shared notebook in the desktop app, you need to export the book to a One NOte package and then share that (how intuitive and user friendly is that and where do you actually explain this anywhere MS rathe rthan wasting hours/days of my time..)
Anyway, so we created channels in teams for teh projects and then linked to the relevant notebooks. 
However, when I open the online notebooks thru the tab and then open in them from there in the desktop app, I see when I look at the propertie sfor the Notebooks that they appear to be now syncing to a sharepoint site, rather than to the Onedrive location we chose. Is that corect? Are we once again going to end up with multiple One NOte notebooks with teh same name in various states of sync (as we have previously)?

Anyone notice that when the link is clicked, it shows up as Guest Contributor? Why not the name of the author if they are accessing the link within Teams (meaning they are signed in)?

It appears that pasting the link to a section no longer works. It did until 2/12. Now when pasting a section link into the new tab interface, the first page of the Notebook is showing instead. This is the same behavior to the user as it was before the fix in January.

Anyone notice that microsoft rarely ever responds to any posts here.

I have noticed the exact same issue.  We had this working as intended in January, and now we can no longer connect to a notebook section or page using the Link or Browse functionality.  We actually have existing channels / teams linked into various sections / pages of OneNotes in the exact same notebook, but now if we attempt to create a new OneNote tab in Teams on a different channel / team and link to a specific section / page, it always displays the first page of the entire notebook.  The odd behavior is that Teams launches OneNote online inside of it, but the link always goes to the first page in Notebook no matter way.  If I paste the exact same link into my browser, OneNote online initiates and navigates exactly to the specific section as intended.  From our perspective this functionality was working (we linked a number of sections / pages), but it no longer functions for us.

Thanks for letting us know of this issue (pasting links to sections in the Teams dialogue no longer links the notebook to the correct section). We also see this issue and are looking into it right now. I will inform the thread when we have a resolution :)

Can you tell those of us who are education tenants whether this OneNote feature will be granted to us for use in Teams? It would be great to start a Team notebook from and existing OneNote.

The bug where tabs linking to specific notebook sections were not opening to the correct section has now been fixed! However the fix will not work for tabs that have already been created that were seeing the issue, so please remove and re-add those tabs. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience!

 

Regarding Education tenants, work is planned to bring this functionality to EDU, but not until the next school year (Northern hemisphere, so ~July/Aug onwards). There are still some kinks to work through for the Class, Staff, PLC Notebook version of the design. Thanks for your patience.

Coincidently I get a similar "libraries contain too many" when I try to use the OneNote Clipper.

I have a set of OneNote notebooks that I have been using locally on my computer, using OneNote 2016 to manage.  They are not stored on OneDrive or SharePoint anywhere.

 

Question:

How do I move/copy these so they can be accessed in Microsoft Teams?

 

Adding a OneNote tab to teams does not give me an option to browse my local computer to upload the notebook (and then to begin syncing).

 

I can't upload an exported OneNote tab to a file section in teams, I get an error when attempting to do so.

 

I can upload an exported .one file to SharePoint in Office 365 but then it won't open in OneNote on-line.

 

the outcome I need, is to get this notebook into the cloud (office 365 or preferably Microsoft Teams) so that others can begin collaborating on it.  Any guidance on how to do this would be appreciated.

Answered my own question a little later.

 

- Create a new top-level OneNote tab, then sync to my local OneNote.

- Copy all pertinent tabs from local OneNote, to the new sync'd notebook from Microsoft Teams

- Sync all

- See all data in Microsoft Teams.

 

This worked great and now we can all work out of the Teams site.

Can you elaborate on what "then sync to my local OneNote" means? I don't have that option after adding a OneNote tab to a Teams channel. My options are Create a new notebook, Browse notebooks (which only show OneNote Online notebooks, not my local OneNote 2016 stuff), or Paste a OneNote link.

I have a OneNote notebook stored on a TeamSite. I'm trying to add a OneNote tab to Teams utilizing the Paste a OneNote link option and I get the following message. Any ideas?

This scenario works for me. I go to the source OneNote notebook. Right click on the Notebook. There is an option to copy the notebook link. Copy and paste into the spot you have indicated - POST ONENOTE LINK.

Hello, has this feature been added to MS Teams for OneNote? Is there a way to share a page via email--without the link? Sharing the actual text/content similar to what one can do in OneNote directly?

Any ETA on this feature for EDU customers?  I tried adding a notebook as a Website link but it does not work. I get the following message: "Last time we checked, this site wouldn't load inside our web app."
