Hello! I'm Alison from the UNC Office 365 Team. A question we received recently from one of our customers is whether you can create a direct link to a channel within a Team? The use case is this: A student has a question about an application they use that central ITS runs. The ITS department has a Team for their department and has created a channel for this specific application. Can the student directly be linked to the channel without having to be a member of the Team? The student is within our AD environment if that helps.

I believe this is a feature of Slack and the customer in question would really like to be able to use Teams for this functionality instead.

Thanks!

Hi Allison - Channel links exist. Go to your Teams, hover on the channel name, click on the ellipsis (...) and you should see "Get link to channel"

Hi Sharvari,

Thanks! We were able to verify that channel links work for a Team you are already a member of, but it does not seem to work for a Team you are not a member of. When I do click the link to a channel within a Team I am not a member of, I am redirected to the main page of one of the Teams I am a member of. I don't get an error message or notification to join the Team/channel.

Is there a setting we need to enable on our end or is this just not a feature of the link to a channel option?

Our specific use case is that we would like to be able to share a link to a channel that a customer can then open up and send a question/request to without having to add themselves to the Team or be added to the Team by the owner.

Thanks!

Alison

I'm really interested in this question as well. we'd like to be able to have a channel for release information or for our support team to post questions to rather than needing one team for internal and one team for external.

This would be something you provision with a webjob or Forms/Flow app which adds the user to the channel.

I have the same use case. Has anyone found an answer to this?

We want to send a link out to have people join a public team instead of having to search for it...bc frankly finding a team to join in MS Teams is much harder than doing so in Slack in my customer's opinions.

Uhm... if you consider a "link" to be hundreds of characters than span multiple lines in e-mail messages. Those things are scary, unreadable, and nobody is willing to click them. It's not like it would be difficult for you to autocreate short-links...

hello,

is there any response to the problem mentioned before?

Hi to all,

i have a similar question, what about link a channel from a different team? Is it possible?

"but it does not seem to work for a Team you are not a member of. When I do click the link to a channel within a Team I am not a member of, I am redirected to the main page of one of the Teams I am a member of. I don't get an error message or notification to join the Team/channel.

This simple question is asked in many way on different threads and yet still haven't seen a clean cut answer as the thread veers of course....

Is there a  way of being apart of a Channel but not the Team. Almost like a guest channel that people either have a link or are invited through some other method (flow, api, whatever) so that they can ask  question or be temporarily part of a channel that is a "project" for a Team that needs a temporary member for just that channel.

This does NOT work, as the recipient of the link has to be member of the team ALREADY. I hope you, and everyone who decided this feature, realise how useless it is. If one has to be already a member of the team where the channel is, why would a link to the channel be needed in the firsty place?!?

What we NEED is a way to invite people who are external to the team to join a specific channel. E.G. we want to be able to invite customers to join us on a channel we share with them, WITHOUT having access to the whole channels available to the team.

I am pretty sure if you Microsoft put 10min of brain into this you would have realised what is needed.
