“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”

  • Benjamin Franklin

This morning at SharePoint Conference North America we broadly announced our vision, strategy, timeline, and investment areas for SharePoint Server 2019.

Welcome to SharePoint Server 2019. Reimagined to focus on you, SharePoint Server 2019 has a new, modern design that works perfectly across screens—whether you’re working with tablets and phones, laptops, or desktops – it’s beautiful and fast, familiar, and yet intuitive. SharePoint Server 2019 gives you instant access to the people, content, and apps you work with the most. You’ll spend less time searching for information and more time working with it.

SharePoint Server 2019 helps ensure that you have access to the information they need, regardless of the screen you choose to access it on.

User experience improvements

SharePoint Server 2019 delivers innovations in user experience from SharePoint Online, with improvements to document libraries and navigation constructs that are consistent with Office 365.

These updates have proven successful in driving adoption in Office 365, and will now benefit SharePoint Server.   Using the cloud as a baseline, we’re bringing the most compelling communications and collaborative experiences to customers of SharePoint 2019.  These investments include the introduction of Communications Sites, Team News, and modern Team Sites to include Lists and Libraries and in support of broader data mobility the Next Generation Sync Client (NGSC) support for reliable access to your documents – anywhere, anytime.

Platform enhancements

As with SharePoint Server 2016, for SharePoint Server 2019 we continue to derive our on-premises server from our platform investments in SharePoint Online with new native support for hybrid scenarios that can be configured during your deployment.

Business process improvements

We know that customers worldwide use SharePoint to support collaboration, search, business process automation, and custom business applications; and we know that many customers rely on SharePoint Server for mission-critical workloads. We know it’s not always easy to move your business, your workloads, to the cloud so we’re investing in supporting the use of process automation and forms technologies such as Microsoft PowerApps and Flow to connect with your on-premises data with 2019.

Key Features

  • Modern Sites, Pages, Lists, and Libraries
  • Team News
  • SharePoint Home
  • Communication Sites
  • OneDrive Sync Client
  • Improved hybrid support and scenarios
  • New developer options
  • Improved support for business process with PowerApps and Flow

SharePoint Server 2019 has been optimized for the way you work, with a familiar, consistent view of information, collaboration, and process. At the same time, IT will benefit from a comprehensive, easily managed and integrated platform that meets the needs of the business today and tomorrow.

Software innovation, like almost every other kind of innovation, requires the ability to collaborate and share ideas with other people, and to sit down and talk with customers and get their feedback and understand their needs.

– Bill Gates

SharePoint Server 2019 has been developed applying these principles – listening to our customers’ feedback and understanding their needs…  Later this Summer we’ll invite you to experience SharePoint Server 2019 as part of our Preview release – look for details soon!

Timeline

SharePoint Server 2019 will be generally available to customers in H2 CY18.  SharePoint Server 2019 Preview will be available to customers in Summer 2018.

Will External Guest Users be able to use Power Apps forms?

Copper Contributor

Any server specs available yet for SharePoint 2019 or is utilizing the specs for SharePoint 2016 still applicable. Would like to start thinking about creating a dev SharePoint 2019 farm.

Thanks

Microsoft

Does Next Generation Sync Client (NGSC) support file on demand feature?

Copper Contributor

Will it be possible to 'upgrade' SP16 to SP17 beta and in fall '18 to SP17 rtm/ release?

Copper Contributor

Will we be able to upgrade directly from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2019, or do we have to upgrade to SharePoint 2016 first?

Copper Contributor

Can we upgrade directly from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2019, or do we need to upgrade first to any previous version?

Copper Contributor

Marcus, (and VVSV Prasad)

I was fortunate enough to attend the SPC2018 in Las Vegas the same question was asked:
Will we be able to upgrade directly from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2019, or do we have to upgrade to SharePoint 2016 first?

The response was that Microsoft looked into it but found that it was not possible to add that into the SP2019 release. So you have to go via 2016 (2013 > 2016 > 2019) other routes are not supported by Microsoft.

Also from 2010: 2010 > 2013 > 2016 > 2019 is the only supported route by Microsoft

Thank you for the information about SharePoint 2019 (on premise). I have two questions I could not find an answer for so far even after SPC2018 :

  • Will we still be able to host public (anonymous) websites on SharePoint 2019 on premise?
  • Does the modern UI replace traditional publishing pages with their web part zones or will both kind of UI be available side by side?

We would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide a well-founded answer to those two concerns.

With SharePoint 2019 on-premise, will we have access to the hive / control templates directory? For example with 2013 / 2016, the location looked like:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\CONTROLTEMPLATES

We have many custom user controls referenced throughout on-premise and were concerned with the focus on cloud / SPFx, that using the hive / control templates would no longer be available.

Do we still have Info path Forms in this Version?

Copper Contributor

Sarat,

Questions were answered confirming that InfoPath Forms will be supported in SP Server 2019, as also will SP Workflows (both 2010 and 2013 style).

Microsoft

@Felix Hu Yes.  SharePoint Server 2019 will support NGSC (OneDrive.exe) to include Files on Demand.

Microsoft

@Kevin O'Neill On specs, SharePoint Server 2019 will have many of the same requirements as SharePoint Server 2016.  For prerequisites, Windows Server 2016 or 2019 and SQL Server 2016 or 2017.

Microsoft

@Torsten Schuster For production scenarios, no, there will not be a supported upgrade path from pre-release versions of SharePoint Server 2019 to the RTM version.

Microsoft

@Marcus Ferbrache SharePoint Server 2019 will not support N-2 upgrade, that is from SharePoint Server 2013 to SharePoint Server 2019.  For SharePoint Server 2013 you will need to first upgrade your databases to SharePoint Server 2016 prior to attaching to the 2019 farm.

Microsoft

@Sarat Abburu Yes.  InfoPath Forms Services will be available in SharePoint Server 2019 to provide backward compatibility and enable upgrades from previous versions of SharePoint.

Microsoft

@Deleted Yes.  You will continue to have access to CONTROLTEMPLATES in SharePoint Server 2019; however, via the 16 vs. 15 hive.

My suggestion for a new SP2019 is following. We definitely need to check all used service accounts before or during installation. I have made the following observation. Sometimes very restrictive security concepts in AD are also applied to the Service Accounts. The security administrator does not want to install the SP himself, but a developer or SharePoint Expert should do so. The dev now compiles the list of his required service accounts with the associated rights. In the course of the installation, there are always unexpected errors that are discussed, but the security admin insists that his construction is correct and all service accounts have the required rights.  ...

Thanks for the info, @Bill Baer. I assume SP Designer 2010 and 2013 workflows will still be supported since they are in SP Online... any updates or upgrades to either style of workflow? Will we still be using SPD 2013 in SharePoint 2019?

Copper Contributor

Are there any Architectural changes took place in SP 2019?

Microsoft

@Brandon Murray Correct.  Workflow is facilitated through either Workflow Manager, Foundation, or Flow via gateway in SharePoint Server 2019.

Microsoft

@Virendra Jain On architecture, MinRole v2 is native, support for #% in files and folders, MAXPATH to 400, SMTP server auth, file I/O improvements, etc. are the core architecture changes.

Copper Contributor

Thanks Bill

Copper Contributor

what is it ?

Copper Contributor
Now the wait for the Public Preview.
Copper Contributor

Can we upgrade directly from SharePoint 2016 to SharePoint 2019? and how we do that? thanks.

Microsoft

@Chau Nguyen Yes.  You can upgrade from SharePoint Server 2016 to SharePoint Server 2019 using the same database attach process as with upgrading from SharePoint Server 2013 to SharePoint Server 2016; however, you cannot upgrade directly from SharePoint Server 2013 to SharePoint Server 2019.

Copper Contributor

Hi Bill,

When or where can we download the SharePoint Server 2019 preview? Several posts mention that the preview should be available in june... Can`t wait to install!

regards,

Ruud

Microsoft

@Ruud van den Hurk Preview will be available this Summer.  We'll keep you updated as we're closer to the release.

Brass Contributor
Is this release going to support, saving Modern sites and modern pages as templates?
Copper Contributor

Will Site Scripts and Site Designs also available like in SP Online for Modern Sites?

Copper Contributor

Big players don't want O365 solutions. They don't bother reducing operational cost rather they prefer to protect the data privacy. Till this phenomena is active OnPrem servers can't be knocked out. Here goes a journey on SharePoint products(BPOS was excluded).

Here goes the snapshot on  SharePoint 2019:

  • PowerApps integration
  • Continued InfoPath support
  • Team News and Communication sites support
  • No support for Hub Sites
  • A modern UI

Hi Bill

Thanks :D

  • Are there a specific community for SP2019 preview?  -
  • SP2019 - "user guides" available?

installed the preview - can't find the SharePoint Home - is this a hidden feature that needs to be enabled as the custom tiles in SP2016 ?

Update: The SharePoint Home resides at the MySite WebApp/Site collection - once MySite are 'enabled/configured' its there :D
