New On-Premises AuthN Support

Improvements in the AuthN support now allow you to connect to more on-premises sources with support for AD FS and more, to include:

  • NTLM
  • Kerberos
  • Forms
  • ADFS
    • MFA
    • SAML Claims
  • Client certificates

Site Structure Creation

Now when migrating your on-premises Lists and documents the SharePoint Migration Tool will create the source site collection or the list for you if it doesn’t already exist, so you don’t have to manually create a destination site. Simply either enter a URL that exist or a valid new URL for the site and the tool will do the rest.

JSON Support

In the current version of the SharePoint Migration Tool you were limited to CSV as a repository for bulk migrations, now on top of supporting a CSV format for automated migration we will also support JSON which will allow you even more fine grain level of control.

Wrapping Up…

Whether you’re looking to migrate from file shares on-premises to SharePoint or OneDrive or from on-premises versions of SharePoint, the SharePoint Migration Tool is designed to support the smallest of migrations to large scale migrations with support for bulk scenarios.

Just wondering if there were any plans to be able to apply metadata or content types in the csv files?

Hi Bill.  Great to see this tool improving.  Any news on including SharePoint 2010 as a supported source option?  I expected to see SharePoint 2010 support in v1.x and definitely in v2.0.  Still a lot of organisations (< 1000 users) not flush with cash running SharePoint 2010 that would benefit massively from O365 that are not going to upgrade because its too hard or expensive.  A number of clients are bulking at the cost of managing a huge migration project that either requires an expensive 3rd party tool or my time to write and manage automated scripts and weight this up against just sticking with SharePoint 2010 that is still working fine.  In many cases a migration tool from Microsoft is what is holding back technical evangelists from leveraging their bean counters to migrate into O365's subscription model and in turn generating more revenue for Microsoft.

Looks like a good on-prem onboarding tool for SharePoint Online. Would be great to have a true Migration Tool that could migrate SharePoint Online -> SharePoint Online. This would allow customers to easily create DEV/TEST site collections in the same or other tenant.

The automatic destination site creation is a really nice addition. This functionality was previously a PowerShell script we had to run ahead of site migrations to ensure all users being migrated were also already provisioned. Cheers to the team!

Howdy - have a scenario that I am wondering about. Which is if a content DB is restored from Prod to Test, then a normal (full) migration is performed via the SPMT v2 in Test, and that job is saved. And if a subsequent restore of the same contentDB is performed from Prod to Test (as before), and that saved job is run via the SPMT in Test, will it perform an incremental migration, or not?

Thanks in advance, Stephen

Will the Migration Tool help migrate Legacy SP Online site collections (ones that originated with BPOS {Url's that begin with XXX-portal1.sharepoint.com}) into updated site collections?

I'm feeling like these legacy site collections will eventually be phased out, if so, will we be left to figure out how to get those site collections migrated on our own with 3rd party software i.e. Sharegate? Or can we count on some assistance from Microsoft?

Can this tool be used for migrating user home drives to OneDrive for Buisness?

Copper Contributor

SPO subsites to their own SPO Site Collections.  Helps with pushing adoption of HUBSites.

How can we automate the Migration API?
Copper Contributor

This is becoming a truly useful tool! Thanks, keep up the good work! That said, would it be possible to add SharePoint2010 support as well? I think lots of organizations are still using 2010, including ours. Even if just for Document Libraries this would be very helpful. Thanks!

@Bill Baer Can I migrate from a file share to a specific subfolder within a document library? I was only able find the document library itself, but not a subfolder.

Brass Contributor

Can this be used for network home drive migration to each of the users OneDrive for Business? In other words will it do the provisioning and have the permissions necessary to upload the files into each of the my-site OneDrive locations?

Copper Contributor

will sharepoint 2010 be supported with the V2 tool?

today was the first time I tried to migrate from SP 2010 & received that the SP version wasnt supported

Copper Contributor

@Carlos Cordeiro

I used the SPMT for Homedrive migrations

in my scenario I prestaged a folder in everyones onedrive ( i didnt want to dump it into the root)

then built out my CSV for the bulk, & fired it off.

worked great....And was SURPRISINGLY faster than Sharegate

Will the SharePoint Migration Tool have the ability to map content types via CSV or JSON in the future?

Hi Steve

How many users, how much data you migrated. What was the performance and how much time it took.

What was your hardware configuration and internet bandwidth of the machine where you run the migration tool.

I tried for one user 2500+ files 3.2 GB, it took 7 hours. I executed from Windows 2008 server (64 GB ram and 100 MBPS bandwidth). I am not able to figure out what it was this much slow. I tried from File Server to user OneDrive.

Hi , are Mac users able to download and use this tool?

Copper Contributor

Hi Bill,

We have a requirement to migrate a site collection content from SP2016 to Online.

Do we have any similar tool to migrate content from SharePoint 2016 to SharePoint Online.

I have tried to use this tool , but its not supporting SP2016 migration.

Thanks

Copper Contributor

Is there I a place to get support or just discuss issues with the tool? I can't seem to find that anywhere.
